script blocking

‘script blocking’ has suddenly appeared on my screen. what is it? what does it do?

Welcome to the forum.

If you are using the pro version of avast, it is one of the providers. It scans scripts on web page. It usually only pops up when opening your browser.

When is it appearing?

It’s an avast provider of the Trial and Professional version.
Which one are you using?
When you open Internet Explorer & Netscape Navigator & Mozilla (not Firefox) browsers the screen splash will appear.
Script Blocker scans scripts executed into a webpage. If they are infected, they will be stopped.

Tech, do I understand correctly that the ‘script blocking’ in avast pro does not work with the Firefox browser.

Yes. It does not work.
Script Blocker cannot work with Firefox: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=14879.msg125840#msg125840

The browser extracts the scripts from the page and passes them to Script Blocker. It scans them for viruses and if everything is OK, the browser continues execution. There’s no whitelist… and the scanning itself shouldn’t affect the execution in any way.

Tech, thank you for your reply.

You’re always welcome.
