I currently have avast free, and I remember when I was installing for the first time, the wizard asked me if I wanted to have avast as my primary antivirus program or to use it as a secondary protection.
I selected primary and have been using it as such.
Yesterday I purchased bitdefender 2012.
Is there a way to change Avast’s settings to make it a secondary protection or does it not matter?
I hate to admit but according to testing from av comparatives and av test, bitdefender is out performing most vendors, including avast. But bitdefender does not have important features that avast does (sandboxing and safezone). For te secondary defence (aka compatibility mode) you must completely uninstall avast (should use uninstall utility) then install bitdefender. Then install avast and choose compatibity mode (works for only certain products so see if it works for bitdefender).
Running two AV on the same computer can create all kind of mysterious windows errors and false detections.
As stated earlier, you need to decide if you want to use Avast or BD for your AV. You can use Avast with other security software and layer your lines of security. An example of this is Malwarebyes-Antimalware (MBAM) http://www.malwarebytes.org/, which has a Free (on-demand) or Pro (resident) versions, and it does not conflict with Avast. It works differently than an AV, and catches many things that an AV does not catch. Most of us here use it.
…and I didn’t know that it could cause conflicts; I thought just having Avast in secondary mode would be fine.
Anyways, once I create a restore point tonight, I’ll try running them both then post results here…

Bad idea…really bad idea. Please read SafeSurf’s reply to find out more. And check out the links she provided.
Just finished installing Bitdefender (After uninstalling Avast)
is it really that bad even if avast has a second line of defense mode? I did read the post by quietman… and hope that Avast& bitdefender encrypts their definitions.
Couple questions before I convince myself into oblivion.
how is anti malware (antimalware bytes) different than antivirus/antispiware software like Avast? Do you think bitdefender will get along with antimalware bytes?
Also, I found this program called IoBit Advanced System Care. is it any good?
Finally, to the person who sent me a private message, the forum website won’t let me send a private message back or even visit your profile… Could you provide me like to the history?
Like I said before, I will set up a system restore point and try to run both AVs at the same time… If you don’t ever hear from me again, assume the worst and tell my story as a warning to any other future potential two-AV runners

Malwarebytes is a specialised tool with limited detection range...it consentrate on a certain type of malware
the program is designed to be used alongside you AV
