I use Avast AntiVirus Home/Professional (September 2009 build version 4.8.1356) and current version Secunia PSI. Secunia scans indicate that Avast is insecure and requires updating. The version of Avast that Secunia PSI detects is 4.8.1335.0, which is old. I update Avast every morning so I know that it is up to date. I have been on to Secunia about this but so far they have not been able to advise a solution to this problem.
Do other forum members have insights into correcting this problem?
No insight but just a piece of information at my end. Are you sure? I’ve scanned one of my computer on which Avast! Is installed and have gotten 100% Secunia System Score. Avast! Version is 4.8.1356, which is the latest one according to the official release note page. Secunia PSI version is 1.5.0.1, which is the latest as well according to the official Secunia PSI page.
Perhaps you are correct. Running a windows search for ashServ.exe files reveals that there are more than one installed. In directory D"\Program Files\Alwil Software a file of this name exists for build 4.8.1335.0, while in D:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4 a file of this name exists for build 4.8.1356.0. I see how Secunia is becoming confused. Looks like an uninstall followed by a reinstall is required. To completely uninstall Avast AntiVirus\Home\Professional are there any special uninstall programs required?
First I would try start menu - control panel - add or remove programs - then click on ‘change/removel’ and select uninstall for all Avast versions you have.
If there are any errors, try download and run this:
Sometimes it´s not possible to uninstall avast! the standard way - using the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in control panel. In this case, you can use our uninstallation utility aswClear.
How to uninstall our software using aswClear.exe:
Download aswClear.exe on to your desktop
Start Windows in Safe Mode
Open (execute) the uninstall utility
If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
Click REMOVE
Restart your computer
Then reinstall from the previous link.
Good luck! Post back here if you have any problems.
Sorry, I guess I overlooked this whole sentence when I read the post first time around…I could have suggested the repair function first but, probably, it would be more ensuring to do clean install as Avastfan1 suggested.
