Secure your router....

Hi malware fighters,

Secure your router the easy way,

  1. Change the standard password. In a lot of cases simple standard passwords are applied
    like 'admin’or ‘password’.
  2. Uninstall remote administration. Routers and modems should be locally administered.
  3. Update your router firmware, regularly leaks are being found up.
  4. Uninstall features you do not need or use like SNMP, UPNP, and DMZ. Especially SNMP & UPNP
are security risks to have them installed.
  5. Change the standard settings. Most vendors use the same settings, like internal network IP-addresses.

All set and done, OK,

What if your router is sever years old and no longer has firmware updates published? Most consumer routers only get firmware updates for about a year after their release.

On a recent trip abroad, my laptop picked up five or six wireless networks, two of which were not secured. (That’s in an apartment block with blocks either side.)

People need to change the router password and set up security or have freeloading piggybackers ‘borrowing’ their internet connection. (Cough) ::slight_smile:

create own encrypted data stream running in non TCP/IP and VPN …
laugh about poor hacker trying to figure out wtf data are floating there

1)Allready done;
2) Same as above 8)
3) Allready the final one
4) SNMP & DMZ, don’t know about it anithing, therefore don’t use them, using a “virtual server” option in my D-Link DSL-2600U for port forwarding instead of UPNP
5) done it

P.S. in addition to suggestion Damie gave above:
