Sometimes when I select “Stop On-Access Protection” from the tray icon, avast! freezes, and there is nothing I can do except reboot.
Is there some way that I can stop this happening, or at least end the task so I can restart avast! rather than having to reboot?
I have experienced this on all my three computers:
2 x Vista 32 Ultimate
1 x Vista 64 Ultimate
Kind regards,
dypsis
I’m running avast on Vista Home Premium and Home Basic and in both cases the issue you are describing does not occur.
Can you post a hijackthis log?

It could help give an idea of what could be causing this.
We will need more information to be able to help you:
What avast! version number?
Do you use a firewall? Which one?
Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Did you have in the past?
Any other security programs that could interfere?

I only use Windows Firewall.
I only have one antivirus running.
I am avast! 4.8.1335.
I don’t use any other security program (resident or non-resident).
I have had this problem since my last clean install, but I have just accepted it.
I have no other problems with avast! or any other application. Just this one.
This problem doesn’t occur every time, so if someone only tries this to see if it will happen, then it may not happen for them.

Might I ask why you actually need to do this (Stop On-Access Protection) ?
What happens if you temporarily disable the avast self defense module?
Right click the ‘a’ blue icon on system tray.
Programs settings > Troubleshooting (tab)
Disable self defense module

I can’t say that I have tried that before. But it would have to be done prior to Stopping On-Access Protection.
