I haven’t gotten any notifications from avast yet. I did another full scan and no threats were detected. But in general, I think my computer is still running slower than before I got the virus. I’ve noticed a few other things that are unusual:

  • when I turn my computer on, the screen flickers and white lines appear when it gets to the “starting windows” screen (see the first picture attached to know what screen I’m talking about)
  • internet explorer stopped working since I got this virus - I’ve had to use google chrome since then.
  • when I start itunes up, a message pops up on my screen (see the second picture attached). I’m also unable to update to the most recent version of itunes.
  • none of the microsoft office programs are working. When I try to open them I receive the message in the third picture attached

Not sure if any of that is relevant but I’ll let you know if I notice anything else. Do you think I should try to re-install these programs though?

I just got 2 warnings from avast. I don’t know what’s going on but I can’t access this site from the infected computer at the moment.

Hi.

Don’t think it is you. Forum has hiccups at times; this one appeared to last about three hours. I had trouble too.

  • Can’t uderstand really what you’re trying to describe and can’t tell what may be couse of this problem.
  • CoogleChrome is much flexible than IE is. I do recommend using another browser.
  • About itunes and office, looks like Windows Installer is out of operation. Windows Repair shall attempt to fix all this.

Please download Windows Repair (all in one) from here:
http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html

[*] Install the program then run.

[*] Go to Step 2 and allow it to run Disk check
[*] Once that is done then go to Step 3 and allow it to run SFC
[*] Go to Step4 and create registry backup and system restore point.

[*] On the Start Repairs tab => Click the Start

  • Click on the Select all button and then click on Start
  • Don’t use the computer while each scan is in progress!!!

[*] Restart may be needed to finish the repair procedure.

I just got 2 warnings from avast.

Can you post screenshot of that warnings.
Try to disable DeepScan tehnology and tell me are pop-ups still occur?

How to turn off DeepScan:

Run avast! > Settings > AntiVirus and in DeepScan field remove checkmark from Enable DeepScan options and press Ok.

yeah, here are the screenshots you asked for. And I’m still getting the same messages from iTunes and office.

Detections are just yet another FP. Ignore them or report as FP.

Try to re-install iTunes and Office, that should be it. I shall remove my tools:

It is necessary to uninstall ComboFix :

[*] Click Start (or
http://amf.mycity.rs/pg/images/VistaStartButton.png
) then Run.

On Windows7 or Vista you may use Start Search field if Run is not available.

[*] In the line of text type in (Copy) the following:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Note that there is a space between " ComboFix " and " /Uninstall " .

[*] then click OK (or press Enter ).

Wait for the uninstall process is complete.

Please download DelFix by “Xplode” to your Desktop.

Run the tool and check the following boxes below;

[] Remove disinfection tools
[
] Create registry backup
[*] Purge System Restore

Now click on “Run” button. Wait for the programme completes his work.
All the tools we used should be gone.
Tool will create and open an log report (DelFix.txt)
Note: The report will also be stored on C:\DelFix.txt

I don’t need DelFix log report.

I recommended to keep Malwarebytes and to use MCShield if you will.
You may download MCShield from one of the following links:

MyCity - Official download link
Softpedija - Mirror download link

It will prevent infection by computer via USB flash drive, mobile phone or any other memory card.
And not only will prevent infection, but it will immediately clean flash drive, memory card or external HDD.

ok, one thing before I proceed… since I’m continuing to have issues with windows I plan on eventually having a friend help me wipe the computer and re-install the OS (he has done this for me in the past). He says we will be able to use the windows 7 recovery disk to get a fresh start. Is this safe to do? Will anything we’ve done here interfere with that process? I understand I will lose any data I haven’t backed up and I’m fine with that.

I would recommended fresh start (fresh install) as virus you had is file infection (infects executable files).
With recovery disk he will be able to repair windows critical files (userspace) and that should do the job just fine.

alright, thanks for answering. I removed ComboFix and the other programs and downloaded MCShield. Is there anything else I should do?

That’s it. We are finished here and your system should be disinfected. With that belief, the recommendation is to keep your antivirus active.

ok, thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it!
