Serious problem

Hi, I’ve used Avast for several years and never had any problems with it until just now…

A couple of days ago I installed the new program version (on my Packard Bell laptop win7 64-bit) but instead of clicking OK when it wanted to restart the system, I closed the box to check up something on the net. About 5 minutes later I restarted manually…

However, suddenly I got a message that the computer couldn’t be started and some Win 7 startup tool started looking for a solution. (there was a brief blue screen with lots of text that said something about file overwritten or something like that - it disappeared in 2 seconds)

Somehow I did manage to get the computer started, but almost every time I started it the same start problem reappeared (except for the blue screen, which I’ve only seen once).

Yesterday, Avast seemed to have lost some info on me, I’ve only used the free version but suddenly it started demanding the license key for the pro version.

Today, I did a system restore back to when I installed Java 17 on the 6th, and now the computer seems to start as usual, but Avast is turned off and it says my computer is unprotected.

I thought I could just remove it and reinstall it, but I get the following error message when I try to uninstall it:

“avast! Setup Fatal Error
Error reading product data from C/Program Files/Alwil Software/Avast/setup_abp-ffffffff.vpx”

and when trying to overwrite it with the new downloaded version I got:
“setup selfextract
An error 0 (000000) occured
Last performed operation was: spawning”

Any ideas how to solve this??

Btw, I haven’t reinstalled Java 17 yet - though I doubt that’s related to this issue… :-\

Run the uninstaller for any AV’s you used prior to avast from here to remove remanents: http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=117113.0
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot

Thanks, that did the trick! All systems are operating within normal parameters.

Btw, quite nifty that the uninstall program offers to re-boot into safe mode, I kind of spaced out and forgot to press F3 or whatever, when I rebooted myself. ::slight_smile:

Your Welcome! ;D
