Server repeatedly timing out

I’m having problems with Outlook Express (Win XP home) using Earthlink on slow dialup. If I try to send an email with an attachment, or one that is more than just a few words long, I get an error message that the server has timed out. I’ve been through Earthlink’s tech support and we’ve changed server timeouts, changed settings, etc., etc. Nothing works. One of the Earthlink tech support people suggested that it was a conflict between Avast’s firewall and a firewall that was included in a recent Windows Service Pak that automatically downloaded.

Do ya’ll know anything about that? Does Avast have a firewall? How would I turn one of them off?

I’m running Avast 4.7-817.
Thanks…

Increase the time out in the internet mail module. Left click the Avast Icon select more details on the bottom right - select internet mail on the left - select customise - select advanced - place a tick in the timeout for internet connection and increse the time to 240 initialy see if that works. And no Avast does not have a firewall, but is Ashmailserv allowed access through your current firewall ? Welcome to our world

OK. I updated Avast to the lastest version a few minutes ago. Increased the internet connection time as you suggested. Still bogging down and won’t send. I don’t have any clue whether Ashmailserv is allowed through my current firewall - don’t know what Ashmailserv is.

This is the message I get.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject ‘Fw: Oh My’, Account: ‘pop.earthlink.net’, Server: ‘smtpauth.earthlink.net’, Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: ‘421 elasmtp-junco.atl.sa.earthlink.net SMTP incoming data timeout - closing connection.’, Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

BTW, this is a new problem. I’ve been out of town for weeks, but this computer worked fine before then. No problem sending emails. I tried system restore but it isn’t fixing it. I assume that something has downloaded in an update of some program or another that is screwing with this.

Thanks for your thoughts…

BTW, I also turned off the Windows firewall completely and an email with graphics still will not send… grrrr…

To narrow this down a bit can you pause the internet mail provider and try to send, if the same error occurs then it is probably a server problem at your ISP end

Edit just read that it is an SSL pop which if my memory serves right does not interface with ashmail

Do not disable the Windows firewall if it is your only defence, it is better than nothing. If the firewall was blocking ashMaiSv.exe you wouldn’t be able to send with or without attachments.

What were you ding when these timeouts occur ?
If sending email with attachments what size are they - is there an attachment size limit with your ISP, etc. ?

On the original warning (not the details) it usually indicates the program involved, if it is your email program, fine increase the timeout).

Before we can deal with an Internet Connection Time out, we need to know why it happened and what caused it. Can you give the full information on the timeout warning or a screenshot. Simply increasing the timeout may not be the best option of your system is sending out spam, we need to get at the cause of the timeout.

I also note this in your detailed information ‘Port: 587,’ this is for the sending of secure email and as such won’t be monitored by avast’s email scanner so I can’t see how avast is involved in this timeout.

OK. I just did a test of my own. Tried sending an email with graphic attachment of the laptop, and it went just fine. Started trying to find the difference between settings on the laptop and the desktop and discovered right off the bat that the laptop is still using Avast 6.763. Desktop has been upgraded to Avast 7.827. I believe that this is the problem since all other settings appear to be the same. So… how do I get Avast 6.763 back on the laptop. I don’t recall exactly when I updated to Avast 7 on the desktop. Trying to do a system restore on XP back a couple of weeks, but I don’t know if that will do it.

Apparently Avast 7, and its assorted versions have bugs in them. I want to put Avast 6.763 back on my computer. Help…?

I doubt that version 4.7.827 of avast has anything to do with this problem, it simply doesn’t block attachments or embedded images as we have said before.

avast isn’t on version 6 or 7, rather 4.7.827 (AKA, avast 4.7 build 827) and it is fine that is the version that resolved some problems in 4.7.726. So if your laptop can connect to the internet then do a manual program update and it will be updated to 4.7.827. Then try your test again, but what we want to know is why the SMTP port is set to 587 ?

Port 587 is for secure email and as has been said before avast doesn’t/can’t monitor secure encrypted traffic, it only monitors traffic for ports 25, 110, 119 and 143.

When sending from your desktop to the account using port 587 does the avast email icon appear or the avast ’ a ’ icon rotate, if they don’t then the port isn’t being monitored.

It’s set to 587 because that’s what Earthlink told me to do . :-\

It’s also set to that on the laptop.

No, the Avast icon does not rotate when i send an email.

I also discovered that I can’t send an email with graphic attachment off the webmail at Earthlink.

hmmm…

I got the version number off the Avast window itself. It said 6.763. I dunno. I’m lost.

thanks again,

caroleu,

I think someone at Earthlink told you wrong. I also use Earthlink and my SMTP is set to port 25 and I am having no problems. Perhaps someone at Earthlink had the impression that you were using secure email and therefore told you to use port 587. If you are using secure email, then the “a” ball will not spin because avast does not scan secure email.

If that were correct and it should have been port 25, then no mail would work, not just those with embedded graphics or attachments.

The fact that avast isn’t scanning the outbound smtp mail on port 587, just confirms what we have been saying avast isn’t a factor, though I’m at a bit of a loss as to why it would only effect graphics/attachments.

However, with the same issue with webmail it could well be and issue with attachment size ?

Check about avast, rightclick avast icon.
