Service failed to start on new installation

Just downloaded Free Avast! 7, on Win XP pro SP2. Installation went smoothly and the quick check at the end succeeded. However, I then invoked Avast and got the message “Urgent - avast service stopped or corrupted.” I note that there is AvastUI.exe in the process list in Task Manager, but no Avastsvc.exe which I see in my old Avast 5 installation (on a different machine).

I have unsinstalled avast 7 and installed a second time to no effect.
Uninstalled again, downloaded again, installed again. No better!
Also tried Control Panel- Add/Remove Programs - Repair, which went through and said the repair had been done. Still no service.

Any clues please?

Whilst it shouldn’t be an issue with the installation, XP SP3 has been out for some considerable time and support for XP SP2 ceased a little over 2 years ago. This leaves your system more vulnerable to exploit, so when resolved you should look at installing SP3.

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Make sure you re-boot after install.
Personally, I make a habbit of re-booting twice after any security installation.

Whoops

Just checked - my apologies - it is SP3 after all. I forgot I had updated.

No specific anti-virus on this particular machine except Spy-hunter which I occasionly ran and which discovered Lop and Whazit. I belately tried to load Avast 7 hoping it would help get rid of those two offenders.
