This should be obvious to me but I am missing something. Whenever I run Avast if it finds something it gives me an alert and waits for my response. Is the a way to set Avast AV to do the entire scan and then allow me to decide what to do when it is completed?
A scan of my entire system can take awhile. I would like to do it late at night and then resolve issues when it is finished.

This is one off the few things missing in the Home version, the ability to automatically handle detections during scanning.
You’ll probably find many posts asking similar questions here.
A workaround is to place a harmless file containing a test virus, the Eicar test, available here: http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm (download the text file, you’ll have to pause the webshield to download it.) and place it at a location that’s scanned early on, such as at the beginning of the C drive, or C:\Windows, so that the scanner will detect it within the first minute or so of scanning. Once it is detected, you can select “continue”, and tick the “don’t show this dialogue next time” and the scan should continue uninterrupted, for you to view the results at the end for any actions that may be needed.
This may be a little irritating. Personally I am OK with it. Something has to be limited in the free version. Other AV’s might limit their detection or cleaning abilities. I think Avast’s choice is brilliant for users that want a good detection in the Home version, a view shared by many, and I’ve found that scans seldom find much, if anything, due to the good protection offered.
(I don’t bother scanning nearly as much as I used to.)

I’ve got 4.8 Pro but still have the same problem as plasmannc and get an alert which stops the scan until I respond. How do i set 4.8 Pro to just scan so i don’t have to sit here and wait for the alert?
Are you using the Enhanced User Interface ?
Have you set-up a Task for the scan giving options for the actions on detection ?
