Setting Chest to 0

Is there any problem with setting the size for the chest at 0 (zero)? It says there’s no limit when set to zero.

Yes, I don’t allow anything on my system to have no limits.

However, the question would be why would you want to do that, are you planning a virus feast ???

Leave the avast defaults as they are until a) you experience a problem with said defaults or b) you get to know avast a little better. Browse the forums, especially the sticky topics at the top of each of the forums, not to mention the avast help file. They provide a wealth of information to help you get the best from avast.

Thanks, DavidR. At the time, even though I only had three things in avast, when I did the a scan last night related to my topic in the virus thread (where you’re helping so much–although there’s still an issue), I received an error saying the chest was full when it found the first of what ended up being several viruses related to “mywebsearch.” At the time, I could see where people here were suggesting the size could be increased, but I couldn’t find how much (I have since seen where someone say 512). avast said it could be set to 0, so that’s why I was asking.

It found six things last night, but it’s not “finding” the offending rootkit during the boot scan, even though I’m still getting the warning, and have gone directly from that warning to the boot scan, as avast suggests, three times now. (see my recent post in the other thread).

Thanks!

The three things in the chest are likely to be back-up copies.

  • The only area you should be interested in is the Infected Files section, this is where the files detected by avast and selected by you to move to the chest are placed.
  • The User Files section is where the user can add files they suspect of being malware but not detected by avast.
  • The System Files section is where avast keeps back-up copies of important system files in case the original becomes infected (leave them alone).

As far the real reason of why you want to increase the size, this relates to the Max file size to sen: and not the size of the chest. If the file you want to send exceeds the max file size then the error is likely to be misleading as 512MB for the Chest is plenty of potential.

However, the max file size is the one likely to be exceeded, so that one should be bumped up to say 2048KB (2MB) that should allow the file to be deposited in the chest. See image of my settings.

Thanks, DavidR. I read a lot on these forums yesterday, and learned a bit about the three places files are (can be ) stored in the chest. The three files I mentioned that were already there were in the Infected Files section. (There are also the three files in System Files section that are the backups you mention.)

I only had the chest size set at the default of 256 (I believe that’s the exacat number), when the error message of it being full came up. That’s when I changed it to 0, not knowing any beter! This morning, after reading your post, I changed it to 512. I’ll also change the “size sent” to the 2048 you mentioned.

Thanks!

You’re welcome, hopefully that should allow you to send the mywebsearch related detections to the chest.
