setting tv to use as monitor

Hi all.
Anybody got any ideas how to get my techwood hd TV to operate as a monitor.
I have bought a VGA to scart lead…nothing, even got a 3.5mm headphone jack to red and black leads to plug into the telly.
I have plugged the VGA scart lead into scart 1 and also tried on scart 2…nothing!!!
Even tried to re tune the TV on analogue as i understand the VGA output is analogue…nothing.
I have only got a Male VGA and female VGA socket on the back of the tower, the unit is about 6 years old, so there is nothing else i can come from, i am not even getting sound to the TV through the leads.
The back of the TV has got 2 times HDMI connections, a red, blue and green connections with the letters Y PB PR, by them, also red, white and black connections with the letters SPDIF and a box with L and R in it, also Sub out which I take to be for connecting an external sound system from the TV, and then a box with 3 connections by it of red, white and yellow, with the letters R and L in a box symbol.
I tried the red and black connections from the sound out of my tower into these 2 connections after speaking to a PC guy, who assured me that this would work!!!
So at the moment I have done what the PC guy said but nothing at all comes on the TV.
Do I need to upgrade my sound and video drivers to run the TV?
Sorry about the long log, but I wanted to give as much info as possible.
Many thanks.

Have you not tried your friend google, using your title as the search string there are many hits, http://www.google.com/search?q=setting+tv+to+use+as+monitor.

I use Plazma as a monitor))
Just need to set up preferences)

Hi Sparks…

Glad to see you again!

Can you give us the brand and model (including serial numbers) of your video and sound cards (or chipsets?)

At least part of this information will be found in the “Device Manager,” using these instructions.

May God bless you and your family

Hi All.

Thanks for your help guys.

Nice to see you again ardvark.

I have finally sorted it, went to a proper PC dealer who looked at my tower and decided, as i new, it was VERY old!!

So I have purchased NVIDIA GeForce FX5500, the chap installed it, I did a few tweaks to make it fit the screen properly, and Hey Presto…success, fantastic picture quality and all sorted with 12 months guarantee.

I think over the last few years or so, I have decided sometimes it is easier to get the Pro’s to help.

Thanks once again for all your help and interest.

Sparks

yeah don’t forget the serial numbers    and yeah, god bless your plasma too ;D
