avast is great, but I find that sometimes the explanations are sketchy, at least to my limited-computer-knowledge mind. Thus, these questions:
a. Can you give a simple explanation of the “network shield.”
b. (Please don’t laugh at dumb questions.) Is a Boot-time scan the same scan that you can do manually? If so, why should it be done?
c. Does a Screen Saver scan do the same thing a manual scan does—I can’t see where there’s a way to set anything up for it other than selecting the avast Screen Saver?
d. Can avast scan flash drives?

@ Becky
You need to wrap URL in the URL tag or non-standard characters like the ! break the link.
[url]http://download950.avast.com/files/eng/avast!-user-manual-home-edition.pdf[/url]
The code tag allows me showing you the tag wrapped round the URL without turning it into a live link, like the one below.

thanks David! For pointing out my mistake.
I should have tested the link. I will test the links I post from now on.
You’re welcome, always learning ;D
I have just downloaded the manual and will read it later.I did not know there was a manual but thanks to this thread now i do. ;D.Thanks for posting the link.
Well there is a help file in the program, but I think the .pdf file is better.
speckledbird:
Please forgive my long-in-coming thanks. I have been sidetracked with other matters. I will read the manual as soon as I can. I don’t think I can copy the material in the file if it is in pdf format, as I don’t have whatever it takes on my pc to have that capability.
I have read the Help sections of the avast program–don’t want you to think I was asking for help without having put some effort into finding out the answers beforehand.
May have some further comments/questions later after having the chance to look over the manual.
Thanks again for your help.
The Help section/file of avast should be good enough, though I think the pdf is a little better.
There is an application or several to be able to read .pdf files, the father of them all Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader, the original. I has become bloated and many security exploits keep getting uncovered so if you chose that you have to keep on top of its updates.
Another popular replacement if Foxit PDF Reader, this has recently been updated to version 3.0 http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php, there is now a free and a paid Pro (more advanced options, you won’t need that) version make sure you choose the free one.
