Severe bug report: 17.7.2314 GUI hangs on XP

Hi @all,
the GUI of the recent version 17.7.2314 just hangs. Has to be killed with Task Manager. Not good.
Avast is running on XP SP3 with IE6 (Home and Pro, with various setups ranging from real time scanner only to several Avast tools installed). Previous versions worked fine. My guess is that there is a buggy new design, which is visible at GUI opening. No menu from there is accessible. When opening the GUI via SysTray icon context menu, the settings part of the GUI is working as previously. The main window GUI (or start page GUI) is not accessible from there.
Therefore it is impossible to run virus scans, access the virus container and the other Avast tools.
Avast is useless this way.

Attachments: Two screenshots of the hung window (done by external camera, because the system can’t take screenshots on severely hung windows). It appears that the design is buggy and not completely loading. Nothing is clickable or accessible by keyboard.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 running a P4 1.8Ghz 2GB RAM XP PRO SP3 and it does take a little longer to open the UI Window on 17.7.2314 … But it does open after about 10 seconds or so. They should do something to speed it up.

That is not a glitch or bug but by design.
avast is using a new gui loader.
and yes it takes a while on old/slow systems before the menu options show.
Guess it is avast’s way to say ‘we will stop support for XP/Vista entirely soon’.

Hi @all,

no, it’s not like this. Sure, it takes longer, but disk activity and CPU activity stop after a couple of seconds. The window freezes then. I did one test over lunch, but no change.

Can someone provide me a link to the previous version?

Otherwise I have to use another AV. Just because a fancy new loader. What a shame.

Anyone has a link to 17.6.x?

Hello
Avast does not provide previous versions, can be by searching the net, you will find your happiness ?
However, I alsouse win xp SP3 and the interface always ended up opening after 5 to 10 seconds after ligthning like in your screen ( same with W7 , W8 and w10), but it was also the case with version 17.6.
The problem is visibly on your side with the update that had a problem
I advise you to perform a repair first, then a clean installation if it still does not work

Of course I did this. BTW, thanks for advising, chris05.

Result of repair installation: Negative, no improvement.

Result of de- and reinstallation: Works a couple of times, then again negative, no persistent improvement.

What to do? If I can’t access Avast GUI, I can’t access the virus container, the tools and parts of the settings.

hello,
normal desinstallation by control panel ?
Or by using avast own cleaner tool in safe mode? → needful
Also better to delete related files and registry key by hand or by using a fully uninstaller tool (like revo) → use it (revo) before avast cleaner tool

nb:For re-installation, prefer the “offline” installer to the “online”

Did you have the same issues when running v17.6? The new UI preloader was introduced in that version.

I can’t find that information in the update log. So my last working version might have been 17.5. and not 17.6.
Without a link, I can’t test that unfortunately.

@chris05:
Yes, by control panel. Any tools aren’t accessible at the moment, so I have to use that way.
And yes, I clean a bit manually afterwards.
And also yes, I used the offline version.

I do not understand why the tools would not be accessible.
avastclear is not integrated into any avast AV and so even if the UI does not open, you should be able to execute it , no ?

You’re right, thanks for the link.
It didn’t help.
So it turns out that the new GUI is incompatible with XP.

@ chris1965
I have yet to install 17.7.2314 on my winXP SP3 system, I still have 17.6.2310, which isn’t so far removed from the latest 17.7.2314 version and that GUI is loading.

That said this new two step UI loading is a pain in the backside, considering it is meant to help load the UI faster. I never had a problem with the UI loading until this crazy two step was introduced and it takes longer than it did before. Whilst it is not by a huge margin but it just looks wrong and when you introduce a two step (anything) I guest you just doubled the possibility of an issue.

I will do a backup image before doing a manual program update later. I would certainly advice a good backup strategy (hard disk imaging) giving an easy route back after any major update (not just AV update).

@DavidR:
Please report then, and good luck!

hello,

No, the issue is somewhere else
like I said before , I use win xp sp3 , and 17.7.2314 UI is compatble as 17.6.2310 was also (like DavidR said) , just a little bit longer but never more than 10 secondes.
Lot of xp users do not encounter any particular worries elsewhere.
I’m sorry it does not work for you :-[

nb:off chance , do the terminal server (windows service) would not be disabled ?

I have updated and for me there is essentially no difference in the loading of the UI (from version 17.6.2310) it still takes a little over 4 seconds.

You say there is no problem when you open the UI from the context menu of the avast tray icon.

When opening the GUI via SysTray icon context menu, the settings part of the GUI is working as previously.

This however, is unrelated to any issue with opening the main UI, you are bypassing it as the two step function is only initiated when opening the main UI. I often use the context menu to bypass the main UI, not to avoid any problem, but to access some option directly or in fewer steps/clicks. The About Avast being a direct access to the Settings section, from there it is much closer and you aren’t having to open multiple windows or the massive main UI.

What is the reason that you are opening the main UI ?
Or is it opening automatically.

Are you experiencing any other issues (that might seem unrelated) ?

If you’re concern is to get to the settings, just do a right click
on the Avast icon in the system tray and select about.

@bob3160:
Thank you for your hint, but I knew that. I described that, when opening the GUI via SysTray icon context menu, the settings part of the GUI is working as previously.

@chris05:
TermService is running. Thank you anyway.

@DavidR:

  • First of all, good to hear it’s working for you.
  • Correct, I’m accessing the settings via SysTray icon context menu to bypass the main GUI window.
  • The reasons to need to access the main GUI window are various IMHO, e. g. to have access to the virus container, self-defined and built-in virus scans, Avast tools and not to forget turning hints on and off.
  • And yes, sometimes the main GUI window automatically opens, such as after a reboot after an update. So annoying.

So it seems users are dependent on the accessibility of the main GUI window, which doesn’t work for me, on none of my XP computers (as described, Home and Pro, all of them with SP3 and IE6).

Any further hints welcome.

P.S. @ DavidR:
Are you - like me - running IE6? Might that be the point, that the new GUI is using some browsers resources?
