Shield Not Active

Hi all. I installed Avast Free on my new computer at school earlier this evening. I checked it and it said the shields were not active or something similar. I’m obviously not at work now so I can’t remember what the exact message was. There was an option to fix the issue, but clicking on it did nothing. As it’s connected to a business network and I’m in the IT department I’m a bit cautious about having a computer seemingly unprotected but on the internet.

I apologise for not being able to give any more accurate information. Is there anyone out there who knows what I’m referring to and can tell me what the problem is? I’d rather be able to fix it myself if possible.

Thanks.

The most common reason is other security installations or remnants.

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Although a new system, many come with a pre-installed AV.

I had a different version of avast installed. I uninstalled it as it was not the one I was told to install.

Probably best to do a clean reinstall:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 6.0.1000 http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).

    1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

I don’t mean to sound stupid, but how do you get Windows into Safe mode?

Hit the F8 button when your system is starting.

Use the Avast version 6.0.1044 from downloadlink in my signature to install. Click on “free” to download the free version.
