Shields not found

98SE Avast 4.8.1368

After installing Avast 4.8.1368 to replace 4.8.1335 (used aws uninstall utility to get rid of 1335, which had stopped updating AVS), I successfully updated AVS, but could not start On-Access Protection. Tried to start the individual shields, got the message; ‘The requested resident task was not found’ for each shield.

Restarted computer, still cannot get shields started. Small red circle on Avast Sys Tray Icon.

Suggestions?

Try a repair via the control panel add/remove (or manage) programs feature.
Go to Avast, select “change” and select “repair” from the options that will come up.

Did a Repair, no change. Message displayed when hover cursor over Sys Tray Icon:

‘avast! On-Line Access Scanner: provider(s) total 6 - 0 running’.

Tried again to start on access scanner, nada, and the individual shields, but get the same message as before;

‘The requested resident task was not found. The operation could not be completed.’

Any other ideas besides uninstall and reinstall? Think that would help?

Remember, this is 98SE.

Ah, sorry, missed that bit.
Avast 5 doesn’t work on '98.
You will have to remove it and install Avast 4.8, which is likely to remain supported to mid-2010 (no firm date set, AFAIK).
After that, you’ll have to either find another AV that works with '98, (I think Rising Antivirus does), use a demand-only scanner, such as ClamWin, and/or just not use the machine on the net. At least, not for anything important. (“Important” to mean there would be no files/passwords etc on the computer that you don’t mind sharing with the world, in a worst-case scenario.)

BTW, Avast 4.8.1368 can be found here, in the right hand column.
Your out of date prior 4.8 version was quite possibly the reason it wouldn’t update any more.
Avast uninstall utilities for all versions can be found here.

Did I miss a turn here?

Running Avast 5 on 98SE was never the issue, always been asking about the balkiness of getting the on-access protection of a newly installed 4.8.1368 on 98SE started. Thanks for responding, though.

Sorry, I think I may have missed a turn.
(Been reading about a lot of Avast 5 issues, recently.)

I’m not to knowledgeable about '98 systems, been a while since I used one, but I would think an uninstall, running the removal tool (linked above), restarting, and then a fresh install of 4.8.1368 (the full installer file) would most likely do the trick.

That’s pretty much what I’ve concluded. Will report back with the results. Thanks for responding.
