sidebar gadgets disappeared

When I execute manual program update, all added gadgets suddenly disappeared from the desktop. The incident repeats each time during manual update procedure!
Avast free v. 6.0.1367

We need more info on this issue. We would like to know that whether the issue is occuring after automatic updates too. Plus try to repair your avast! Program.

You can repair avast! from.

Control Panel → Programs and Features → avast! Free software → Repair.

Reboot the computer once and check. Update us with results.

After repair and system reload nothing fixed yet and the problem still persists.
No it happens only while manual program updates are being performed, definitions auto-updates run smoothly without the mentioned issue. Considering program update in default set is in non auto interactive mode I never toggled this setting to auto.

Hi,

Please try to reinstall avast! from scratch.

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
You can download it from http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe
  2. Download the latest avast! version that you have purchased and save it.
3.Run the avast! Uninstall Utility in safe mode and restart to Normal mode. (Run the tool two or three times by selecting the respective folder)
  3. Install avast! using the setup saved
  4. Check the status and post back with the results.

It’s a known problem and has been around since the early 6 versions, there’s also no need to run manual program updates until there has been a new version release which you can find out about here on the forums.
Just to add ! opening the gadgets or rebooting after a program update ( which you would have to do if there was a program update ) brings the gadgets back.

No positive result. Тo top it all after the fresh reinstall now I can’t go further with the registration procedure, the “retrieving information,…” window disappears too several seconds after pressing the register button…
{craigb}Yes I do something similar - when sidebar crashes using task manager I just launch in a new task prompt sidebar.exe process and the widgets come back to live.

There is no point on trying to solve the gadget problem before rebooting. After the PROGRAM update finishes, reboot.

After a “fix it”, reboot. After avast repair, reboot.

Now, since you still have the problem but instead of a simple reboot you were unnecessarily suggested to make a clean re-installation, you should probably need to delete your firewall rules related to your web browser and to avast (all of them). Then reboot.

After the reboot, avast will try to update and the rules should be re-created (“learning mode” or equivalent).

Once avast can perform normal definitions updates, and you can test that your web browser also works, try the Free registration again.

Please report back.

I actually don’t forget the reboot step after repair, reinstall or program update and obviously this is the way to deal with gadgets vanishing bug. Yes I did restore my windows firewall to defaults and avast! registration ran successfully , thanks to the help given here!
