I do not understand how to turn off those bothersome audio messages with a popup that you get when you receive a virus on Outlook. I get lots of viruses. I have silent mode checked on both the Outlook and Internet Mail providers, but am not sure if I should check the “yes” or “no” box. Is there a way to stop those audiovisual warnings??
Do you use both MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express? If not you don’t need both providers active. Outlook/Exchange for MS Outlook and or Internet Mail for OE.
If you are getting lots of viruses, then I suggest that you add some form of filtering to your security. I use a spam filter MailWasher Pro (free version available - 1 email account only) that will filter spam directly at source, the email server, at the same time any suspicious email can also flagged for deletion. You then only download the email you want with your existing email program.
Yes, the Professional version 8)
The Silent Mode with answer No will send the file to Chest on Outlook Express (and other email clients) but I’m not sure there is this feature on MS Outlook. It was promissed to version 4.5 (next one)
Thanks for your replies. I followed the advice (silent mode + no) but am still getting those annoying warnings. If I have to buy the professional version to get rid of them, I will just go back to Norton. Is that what this boils down to? Thanks – Steve
We are trying to help you, one, you didn’t answer my question.
Do you use both MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express?
We don’t ask questions simply to fill space, there is a reason. If you are using MS Outlook (plug-in), then the silent mode currently isn’t supported, it will be in version 4.5 I believe, due soon.
Again if you are getting so many virus warnings, don’t treat the symptom do something about the disease, filter email at source. Defence in depth.
A threat to go back to Norton if you have to buy the avast Pro to get rid of the warnings, is hardly going to stir people to help. You have to ask yourself why you are/want to leave Norton. Lets try to solve you problem with threats to go back to Norton, because many ex Norton users are very happy avast! users.
There is no way you would get this level of help/support from Norton and this for a free version of avast!
Thanks for your reply. My message did sound a little rude and threatening – sorry!!! :-\ Did not mean to sound that way - sometimes things do not sound right in email/postings.
Am using only Outlook, not OE.
May I make a suggestion? I think that your interface could be improved by adding a little more information explaining, for example, what the Internet Mail Provider is for (ie, not necessary for Outlook) and also explaining the various cnfiguration choices under silent mode (ie, what “yes” and “no” mean) and elsewhere in the configuration – it is slightly confusing. You could expand the text or add info in those little popup help windows that some program use when you put the cursor over a selection.
Anyway, any idea when the new version will appear? Thanks again – Steve
Be careful what you ask for, its all in the avast help file all you have to do is read it.
Extract from the avast help file ‘Resident protection’
Resident Protection Providers
avast! resident protection is based on so-called resident providers - special modules protecting various parts of your computer, e.g. file system or e-mail.
Standard Shield. It checks the applications being run and documents being opened. It will not allow an infected application to start or an infected document to be opened, thus possibly protecting you from activating/spreading a virus. Outlook/Exchange. It checks incoming and outgoing e-mail messages processed by MS Outlook client (it is part of the MS Office package - it is not the same as the simpler Outlook Express!) or MS Exchange. It will refuse to accept or send a message containing a viral code. Internet Mail. It checks incoming and outgoing e-mail messages processed by clients other than MS Outlook or Exchange, such as Outlook Express, Eudora etc. Again, it will refuse to accept or send a message containing a viral code.
Ref new version, a search of these forums for 4.5 will no doubt return many hits as this topic has been previously discussed a number of times.
In fact, Vlk promissed this
Steeve, the help files have the answers for the Yes and No in Silent Mode.
Ok, could be a tool tip or the text be more specific… We discussed this a lot in the past.
Version 4.5 is late ;D Maybe next days of October 8)
Me included 8)
You can try to reach this level of support in any other paid antivirus… you won’t find 8)
