Could anyone tell me what happens to suspicious e-mails in silent mode if allow through is checked? How do you know they are suspicious in that eventuality? Also, I have opted to turn off the attachments checking in the heuristics section until the ability to ignore certain attachment types is provided as I keep getting so many false alarms. I hope this becomes a feature in a future release.

I must say I don’t really understand the question… if silent mode is set and “Let it be delivered” is selected, the “suspicious” e-mail is simply delivered (just as an ordinary e-mail).

I thought that maybe Avast discreetly gave a warning (perhaps via a tray icon), otherwise it’s just the same as turning off the heuristic analysis. Perhaps it ought to be reworded as Do not use heuristic analysis

You got it all wrong.
Disabling is NOT the same as silent mode.
Disabling = not working = not doing anything at all
Silent mode = working = doning it’s job but don’t bother the user with notifications/questions
You can read the difference in Avast’s help file.

Well, there doesn’t seem to be much about Silent Mode in the Help files. And I cannot see much difference between not having the heuristics working and letting through a suspicious e-mail in Silent Mode. Perhaps it’s so obvious that I cannot see it.

No, you are right… the “Let it be delivered” option in the heuristics’ silent mode is actually the same as turning off the heuristics.
I guess a better option is “Mark it in subject files” - in that case, the e-mail is also delivered, but the subject is prepended with [avast! - SUSPICIOUS] text.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I’ll just leave heuristics turned off then for the moment in the hope that the option to ignore certain file types may be added at some future time.
