when avast updates database, why does it sometimes say: “AVAST Virus Lab collects around 4,000 new viruses daily”,and other times: “Our virus lab collects around 50,000 new virus samples daily” ?
I have no idea where you are getting this information from.
There could well be a big difference of the word unique isn’t used in the information. It could be quite possible to get XXX new virus samples in a day, but depending on the source many could be the same, e.g. not unique.
Also like its competitors, Avasts detection starts with gathering threat samples. (Jindrich) Kubec said that the company sees about 50,000 to 60,000 new virus samples per day,

After each database update, check Avast main GUI → Maintenance → update → “number of definitions”.
Once in a while, Avast cleans up the definitions and you might see the number also going down (which of course doesn’t mean that some malware is not identified anymore; it is just a new “clean up”).
i’m not asking about how many signatures are added each day -not to say that the number of daily signatures added isnt important, since number of signatures reflects the number of new viruses users are protected from,as viruses are diverse and cant be all squeezed in 1 or 2 signatures- but rather how many viruses(trojans, worms, spyware, adware, etc.) are analyzed or seen each day by the avast lab.
Still almost not important IMHO. Check the history link I posted to have some sort of indication, and you could even transform the history page to a CSV / EXCEL to count them.
Because it is not important. On the long run, either the lab gets all viruses (whichever the frequency of new viruses) or users will tend to abandon that software.
Does Avast protects you effectively? That’s the only important question/answer for this type of tool. Moving on.
