sirefef-PL removal

Hello. This is my first post to this forum. My stepdaughter’s computer became infected with a variety of viruses, most of which were removed by Avast free in a boot scan, but some were not. I chose to ignore them in the scan because they had infected the desktop.ini and other files in the windows folder (and avast asked me if I was SURE I wanted them moved to the chest). Since I was unsure, here I am. The viruses I did not remove with Avast were sirefef-PL, bitcomminer-U, malware-gen, zwangi-w, and zwangi-k. Can I go ahead and select to have those infected files moved to the chest or deleted or do I need to do something else. If I need to send log files, tell me exactly what to send. Thank you.

follow this guide and attach (not copy and paste) logs from malwarebytes / OTL / aswMBR
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

I followed the cited guide and am attaching the resulting log files. Please advise! Thanks. PS. Final attachment in separate post due to file size upload limitations.

And, here is the final log file.

yepp… you have the Siref rootkit

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_extraction.png

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Thank you - I have run OLT and ComboFix per your instructions, and am attaching the new logs. I did have to reboot after ComboFix was finished, because none of my browsers would work. But, after reboot, everything seems to be fine. So far, Avast hasn’t alerted me to malicious URLs (which it was doing with almost every browser action before this morning). Am I clean?

I also saw in your message that you think the virus arrived via a torrent. Can you give me an example of a torrent site that I can pass along to my stepdaughter so she can understand what to avoid? I assume too that now that I have Avast installed, she will be a bit safer anyway (she had no security software before; what I had given her originally had expired). Thanks.

This one probably came via a torrent as the fake software author will get it past a quick scrutiny, there were also two other infections in addition to the sirfef

O4 - HKU\S-1-5-21-4131425674-13443943-1818461494-1000..\Run: [adsve] C:\Users\Hilary van Noort\AppData\Roaming\adsve.dll (BitTorrent, Inc.)

How is the computer behaving now ?

Also could you check that windows updates works

Well, I had three optional updates found in Windows update, and when I try to install them, the update failed. Error code 80246008.

Other than that, all seems fine… ?

OK lets fix that

Download bits.reg to your desktop
To do that right click the following link and select Save as…

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/bits.reg

Once on the desktop right click and select merge
Accept the warnings
Reboot and download the updates

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
