Sirefef Problems

Hello!
Yesterday, my computer got infected by sirefef.

I’ve tried the instructions detailed here: http://malwaretips.com/Thread-How-to-completely-remove-ZeroAccess-Sirefef-rootkit-Removal-Guide but Windows Security Essentials is still saying there’s traces of sirefef in my computer. Not as much as there was before, but it’s still there.

Help please? This computer is relatively new and I don’t want anything bad happening to it already.

I’m running Windows 7 x64-bit.
I don’t have the installation disk to Windows; the computer came with it pre-installed and they didn’t give me a Windows 7 disk.

=====

EDIT: I’m going to try and clarify all of the problems I am having just in case it happens to help the process at all. This list will most likely be updated often, as I am recalling things suddenly.

  • For a while now, whenever I turn off my computer/reboot it, I have to uninstall my drivers and then have my computer scan for the drivers again because my keyboard doesn’t function unless I do so. Doing this last night caused two more cases of sirefef to pop up in Windows Security Essentials. It happened every time I scanned for drivers.
  • Like some people on this forum, all of my problems started happening after clicking on something about an “Adobe Update”. ugh.
  • My computer has gotten a little bit laggy, and it seems like the mouse cursor is moving a little bit too smoothly, but that might just be my paranoia.
  • My default browser and home page were also altered, but again, I don’t know if that’s relevant or if that’s just my paranoia.
  • Last night, I heard an ad for a movie or something, even when I closed all of the windows and programs on my computer. When I checked the sound option, it said that something with no name available was running.

Please follow the thread here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

And attach the logs in this thread

I am having problems posting my attachments.
For some reason, when I try to push “post”, the computer freezes up for a little while, and then it doesn’t allow me to post the…post.

Should I just copy + paste everything?

Going to attempt to post my results again.
If this goes through, I sincerely apologize for the double post.

OK this one is changing again…

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

:OTL [2012/07/18 15:26:39 | 002,136,664 | ---- | C] (Kaspersky Lab ZAO) -- C:\Users\Autumn\Desktop\iexplore.exe.exe [2012/07/18 14:58:47 | 000,328,704 | ---- | C] (Microsoft Corporation) -- C:\Windows\SysNative\services.exe.FB182CBECF68BFEB [2012/07/18 14:51:35 | 000,328,704 | ---- | C] (Microsoft Corporation) -- C:\Windows\SysNative\services.exe.06A1658BEFEF3656 [2012/07/18 14:42:11 | 000,328,704 | ---- | C] (Microsoft Corporation) -- C:\Windows\SysNative\services.exe.216CDD419DD664AD [2012/07/18 14:36:06 | 000,328,704 | ---- | C] (Microsoft Corporation) -- C:\Windows\SysNative\services.exe.EF20670ECCAA86D2 [2012/07/05 19:04:15 | 000,000,000 | ---D | C] -- C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ƒ\ƒtƒg“d’r

:Files
ipconfig /flushdns /c

:Commands
[purity]
[resethosts]
[emptytemp]
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]
[Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_extraction.png

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

I completely forgot about that bit at the end where a reboot would fix the whole “program marked for deletion” thing and started freaking out. Had to access the instructions through my PS3, haha.

I still have to uninstall my drivers when I restart my computer in order to use my keyboard and MSE is still making note of two threats. (Sirefef Y and B)
In any case, I will be posting my OTL Quick Test results on the following post. When I booted up my computer, it gave me a report, so I’m going to attach that as well, just in case. Also attaching the ComboFix results.

EDIT: Actually, the results of the Quick Test are really, really long, so would it be possible to just attach it? Or would you really prefer it as a separate post?

Here’s the Quick Test Results as an attachment.

What is the location that MSE is reporting ? Is it OTL_moved files ?

  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
File:: c:\users\Autumn\AppData\Local\Temp\0052DC9.tmp c:\users\Autumn\AppData\Local\Temp\0069749.tmp c:\users\Autumn\AppData\Local\Temp\007A396.tmp c:\windows\SysWOW64\Drivers\X6va008 c:\windows\SysWOW64\Drivers\X6va009

Driver::
X6va005
X6va006
X6va007
X6va008
X6va009

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exeWhen finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

The location issss…
containerfile: C:\Users\Public\Desktop\CC Support\Samples\Services.exe.vir
files:C:\Users\Public\Desktop\CC Support\Samples\Services.exe.vir → 731 (Sirefef.Y)

file:C:\Users\Public\Desktop\CC Support\Samples\Services.exe.vir (Sirefef.B)

Typed it as I saw it since I couldn’t copy+paste. But those are the locations.

Do you recognise the folder ? C:\Users\Public\Desktop\CC Support

I will now delete that with OTL

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Files C:\Users\Public\Desktop\CC Support

…I have no idea what that file was, or when it got there.
But when I uninstalled my drivers (again), there was no problem! MSE didn’t detect anything, thank goodness.

Though now I’d like to be able to make it so I DON’T have to uninstall my drivers every time I turn my computer on just so I can use my keyboard. It’s very time consuming and makes it so I never turn the computer OFF as much as just make it SLEEP.
Can’t be good for the computer.

What drivers do you have to uninstall ?
What device do they relate to ?

I just uninstall all of the ones in Device Manager under “Universal Serial Bus controllers” that have a little yellow triangle with an exclamation mark next to it.

They are usually called “Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller”, "Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller, and “USB Root Hub”. There are multiples of all of them.
Just uninstall those and then scan for hardware changes.

Really, I only have to do all of this so my keyboard will function. I kind of have to do the same thing for my drawing tablet, but it’s a little bit less time consuming because there’s a menu built into the program to reset the drivers.

HAve you tried updating those drivers using windows updates ?
