Size of virus database and avast 4 setup program

If you haven’t notice yet…
Virus database (vpsupd.exe) has 20,290 Kb
Avast seteup (in Portuguese Brazil) has 21,998 Kb

What a huge virus database…
Can’t the structure of it be packed?
Isn’t avast using more resources (RAM) due to it?
Is there a solution?

It is packed (and it’s actually not that advantegous, because to use it, it has to be unpacked into memory anyway… so it’s possible that avast! 5 will have a bigger, uncompressed VPS - which will actually use less resources)

Yes, it is.

Other than asking malware authors to stop creating new malware… not really.

Wow. Have you actually asked them? The problem is that if they really listened to you and stopped making malware, you would be out of business. So, asking something like “Thank you for making malware and please don’t forget to send us samples of your works. - regards, Alwil team” would be more reasonable.

I think it would be good if avast had a return to sender button so we could send the virus back to the morons that send them out.Probably not feesible, but a nice thought. ;).

Thanks Igor… seems that a lot of the RAM used by the antivirus is taken by the VPS and not the program (engine)… Hope I could receive a gift for Christmas… a new laptop

Tech, almost all computers sold out in last few yers have over 1GB of RAM, many older computers have at least 512MB of RAM… 20 to 30 MB for the VPS is not a problem (and will not be in future) imho

You’re right… If I’m lucky I’ll get a new with 4 Gb
