Skin Error Message. Tech Support Doesnt Fix.

Below was the problem that I was having, but when I followed the recommended action to fix the problem, the only message I got was “DllRegisterServer in ACTSKIN4.OCX failed. Return Code was: 0x80020009.”

Q: I have installed ‘avast! 4 Home’ and everytime I try to open it, I get an error message stating: “unknown error message”, “Application cannot load skin. Function usiGetSkin Failed”. How can I fix this?

I have Win XP Home edition. I pasted the correct command in Run, and the file was recognized, but it would not register. I tried starting Avast afterwards & I just kept getting the same error message.

Below was the recommended action to take by Avast support:

Select START → RUN…
Enter the following command:
If you have Windows NT or 2000:
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
If you have Windows 95, 98 or ME:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
If you have Windows XP:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
Press OK (or Enter).
A message saying that the file was successfully registered should appear.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

For some reason, ActiveSkin (the 3rd party library avast uses for skinning) does not seem to be working on your system. As a workaround, we may disable skinning in avast - that should solve the problem.

To do that, open the file \data\avast4.ini, look up the [UserInterface] section, and add the following entry:

StartWithSkin=0

Strange that this happens in XP…
Do you use any other antivirus in this computer?

Thanks for the help. It worked fine after I edited the ini file. Very good tech support. I uninstalled my other virus program then rebooted prior to installation of avast, just to answer the question in your reply.
