Slow boot, aswserv maxed out cpu.

Hello, The company I work for, under my advice, recently purchased 25 seats of Avast. One of our computers is having difficulty with it. It is an E-Machine, 3 gig hz, 512 ram, with Windows XP home edition SP 2. The symptoms are a boot time of about 5-6 min, and occasional slow down where the aswserv file is using 100% of the cpu. I have tried setting the security level to normal, and high, but that doesn’t seam to have any effect on any computers in the office so far as performance goes. This one computer is the only one with an issue. Out side of work related programs, it does have limewire, and ICQ installed, other then that has MS Office, autocad 2006, and a few lighting calculation programs on it. Any help would be apprechated,

Thanks,
David Raynor

How about a firewall - is there one installed on the machine?

Nothing other then the “Windows” Firewall. Same as setup as all the other machines in the office.

OK, try to temporarily stop avast! resident providers, one by one, to see which of them uses the CPU.
The likely guesses would be Standard Shield or P2P Shield.

Also, is the avast tray icon spinning all the time (I mean the blue (a)-ball icon)? If so, it means that avast is constantly scanning something. It would be useful to know WHAT it is scanning.

Ok, From the ADNM How do I stop the resident scanners on only one machine? Also, the (a) blue ball is not spinning constantly, just occasionally as I would expect. I have also had another E-machine in the office do the same thing with the aswserv maxing out, but that computer also has some SP2 issues that I am working on fixing at the moment. Just wondering if you have heard other issues with E-machines? Thanks for the suggestions.

Well, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Avast managed client on the troubled machine. Still having the same results. Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks,

Hi,

I’ve the same problem. Before with one PC, now with lot of PCs in my office.
Server Config : SBS2003 SP1, ADNM
PCs Config : W2000 SP2 or XP Pro SP2

Sometimes the CPU is 99% off with AWSERV, but nothing is open. I’ve changed protection normal or high with ADNM, same problem. How can i suppress resident service with ADNM ?
And How can i view resident service avast on PC ?

Excuse me for my poor English. But this problem is not pretty, i’ve 20 Pcs with this problem…
I’m testing with an Avast Professionnal directly on the PC.

PS : Avast was OK with ADNM during 3 month, and now it’s not good. Is it a new version with problem ?

Thanks

As of now I have given the user of that computer a local admin password to disable avast on there machine while they are on it. I manually make sure to run a check each week. This is not ideal, but with my other responsibility’s it is all I have had time for. The only explanation I have so far is that there might be a log file that is being scanned, but the tray icon is not spinning. Should have time this weekend to play with it more and find out what is going on.

Hi,

With a standalone version it’s OK !
But when i install avast netclient with adnm it’s the same problem, the cpu is off until 2-3 min, sometimes it’s OK.
Is it a problem with ADNM ?

I have noticed on some machines when the adnm is actively doing a scan the client sees a second blue avast ball in their system tray and this one has a green triangle in the top right corner indicating that a scan is active. This is not being displayed on all the machines when it is being scanned. I have noticed on my own pc (dual core) that is is taking up 50% of the processor. If it were a single core it would be taking up 99%. Once the scan has ended, my cpu usage returns to normal. Since mine is a dual core it is bearable, but for the other machine in the office it slows it to a crawl. Does this ring any bells?
Thanks,
David

Upon testing this theory I canceled the scan threw the adnm, but the 50% CPU usage did not cease. also in this case it was the AvAgent.exe hogging the power. any ideas?
Thanks,
David
