Every since I installed Avast last Sunday, my bootup has slowed down considerably~~it takes twice as long from pressing the on button until my desktop is totally up.
I use Win Patrol and just checked “Startup Programs” to see if anything had been added that would slow down boot up. The only new additions there are: Avast! Web Scanner and Avast! (ashServ.exe) I assume that both need to be in Startup for Avast! to work properly.
Question: Could thelr addition to startup be the cause of my slow boot up?
Avast will scan all files that windows and other programmes open at startup so if you have a large programme starting this may be the cause. I remember reading here somewhere that kerio firewall opens a lot of files on start up is that your firewall?
I just now realized that I posted on the wrong forum~~I have the Home
Edition. :-[ Should I move my question to the Home Edition forum?? I don’t know how to delete my post to this forum :

I have very few programs in Start up~~Win Patrol, Zone Alarm, and now Avast! I use Zone Alarm Free firewall.
You can’t delete it, only one of the Moderators can move it to the correct forum. Hopefully they will notice it and move it.
During boot avast is scanning certain files as they are acessed by other programs to ensure you are protected at what is potentially a vulnerable time. This stops potential viruses being loaded into memory.
If you have changed the Standard Shield to High sensitivity more files will be scanned, the Normal setting gives the best compromise between performance and protection.

DavidR~~
I read somewhere on the Forums that it is better to have the Standard Shield set to high, so I changed mine from standard to high.
So, now I guess it’s time to move it back to standard and see if that speeds up my boot time. Thanks!!

Added: Would it make any sense to move the standard shield setting from high to normal before shutting down, and then back up to high once I have booted up?? I am surfing the net and opening programs/pages at the same speed as always~~only boot up has slowed way down.
No, I do not see an advantage on doing that.
High is safer than Normal.
But, generally, for common users, Normal is the best balance between security and protection.
Now this is interesting. I have a very similar setup to DB. avast, Zone Alarm and Win Patrol.
Yet my Win Patrol Start Up Programs ,the only entry is Avast ashDisp.exe. Seems like there should be some consistency here. Seems like one of us has a problem. Either she has too much of avast running at startup or I am not getting a boot scan?
Anyone know for sure what exactly should be running at startup?
BTW …I am setup for 4 providers…mail, IM, standard and web.
You mention nothing about your standard shield settings, so it is difficult to compare these things with full detailed system information. For instance DB said “The only new additions there are:” this implies there are others, where as you state “the only entry is Avast ashDisp.exe” so there could be huge differences.
This is without mentioning what processes that are running on boot which aren’t shown as startup entries. Or the differences in your system performance specs, so I think you will be able to see any consistency would also have to have some comparison on like for like.
You will be having files scanned (it isn’t a full blown boot scan) during boot, once the boot has completed and the avast icon has stopped rotating check the Scanned Count: in the Standard Shield and you will see how many were scanned during and immediately after boot.
