Slow Lan Network speed : Paid Avast Internet Security

Hello,

I have a fully paid Avast Internet Security version and noticed that whenever the Firewall Component is active that my Lan Network speed/bandwidth drops by more than 50%. When I do a file transfer from a network mapped drive to a local drive generally the transfer speed reaches 1 gigabit , around 120 Mb/second. However when the Firewall Component is activated the transfer speed drops to 30-40 mb/second. When I turn off just the Firewall while leaving all other Avast Internet Security components active the speed revers back to 120 Mb/second.

Hence I am 100% sure the culprit lies with the Firewall of Avast Internet Security. I already set my Network Connection within the Firewall settings to “Private Network” as the computer along with all other machines in my Lan connects to one router within the Lan Network. What else can I try to regain my normal transfer speed? This problem also negatively impacts my Remote Desktop connections from one PC to another within the Lan network. Interestingly, the difference in transfer speed for file transfers is observed when I activate/deactivate the firewall on the PC from which the file is transferred/loaded. I do not perform any changes on the destination PC’s Avast Internet Security settings onto which the file is transferred.

What am I missing or is this a bug?

Also, related, is there a way I can raise a ticket with technical support of Avast? I have not found a way to raise a ticket anywhere on the website. Thanks

  • Which version of AIS…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

PS: Support: https://support.avast.com/contact

AIS version : 18.2.2328 (build 18.2.3827.0)
OS: Windows 10 Pro , 64 bit, 10.0.16299, Build 16299
No other security related software installed, only Windows build in Windows Defender but I assume it is deactivated upon initial AIS installation
I used Norton but this is a fresh Windows 10 install so on this system no prior AV was installed

  1. Download Avast Internet Security: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup_offline.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

No change, same bandwidth throttle even after a complete AIS de-install and reinstallation ;-(

OK, follow instructions: https://support.avast.com/article/33/

thanks, will hopefully have someone from support contact me about this issue.

You’re welcome.

quick follow up question if I may, I have not changed the defaults in this tool you asked me to download and run and clicked through and it exited automatically. I assume that it did send the support/dump files to support or do I have to do that manually? If yes, what is the email support address to send the files to?

Thanks

If you did follow the instructions, it got uploaded to Avast FTP server.

Bump, anyone else with suggestions/ideas? Though I am in contact with Avast support so far their suggestions (adding a custom packet rule to the firewall) did not improve/help matters either.

Anyone else who experienced a significant reduction in local network bandwidth/traffic when the Avast Internet Security Firewall is activated?

Thanks
Matt

I’ll get this escalated to the developer of Avast Firewall for a response - I don’t have this issue when transferring to a network drive but maybe there could be an issue somewhere.

I have not yet heard back from any tech support with a viable option to solve this problem. If this bandwidth issue cannot be resolved I will probably need to ask for a refund and choose a competing product because my local network as of now is severely limited due to some issue with the AIS firewall.

Post your ticket-ID.

OK, I reported it, hope it helps…

thanks

The problem I described has never been fully investigated by Avast support, all I received was some canned answers. I followed their initial suggestions to uninstall and re-install the software with their un-install tool but it did not resolve the problem.

Beyond that, support never acknowledged there is a problem nor investigated further even after I was asked by three different support staff to submit a support package and dump file which I did. I never heard back after sending that to them each.

I now decided to discontinue my relationship with Avast and requested a full refund of the AIS product because I am pretty certain there is a serious flaw in the AIS firewall product but also because I am very frustrated with the support I have been receiving. My purchase lied within 30 days of the refund request. I never received an email to acknowledge my refund request, no email with details of the refund procedure and date, and never received a reply even after submitting a separate request to billing to process the refund request.

All in all, I leave with avast in good conscience knowing that this is not the support level I came to expect and that the product does not meet my expectations. A company that is extremely fast at pulling money off peoples’ credit cards should at least have a minimum amount of customer support and honor its refund policy. So far Avast has failed in all those. From my own experience so far I will recommend anyone I come across to not use avast products for the time being because of its poor customer support.

Good luck to all who use this product and battle through technical issues (I am seeing tons of new daily issues popping up in the forums here, way more than in the forums of competing companies). I was initially drawn to this product because it offers a sandbox to run programs in. But I can’t accept a firewall that cuts my local network bandwidth in half (from 110 megabytes/second to 25/30 megabytes per second for local network file transfers and it also severely slows down remote desktop connections.

Thanks to those who helped in this thread to troubleshoot and who provided suggestions. I could not be more grateful as those suggestions went beyond anything I received in terms of support from avast staff.

Update: I was eventually contacted by billing and a refund was issued to my account for AIS

The firewall in Windows 10 is pretty good. It’s also part of the OS.
