Slow startups

HI everyone

I am using windows xp pro on PIII 800 Mhz intel with 128 MB RAM.

My problem is my computer starts verrrry slow 4.3 mins to start. i have found on the net that it is very slow for a PIII 800mhz with 128mb ram.So I have tried everything to make the startup fast.

I also tried bootvis.exe to make it move faster. But none worked. then i uninstalled many programs which were there at the start using msconfig.

Now I have just 4 programs zonealarm, avast , Lan connection and a mouse program for using an extra button on the mouse (it is necessarry to run it).
Still the startup time did not decrease. 4 mins and 10 secs now.

Later i found out that Avast was scanning all the program files ,windows files etc on starts.
I have nearly 50 programs in the program files folder.
I think, on startups, scanning boot sector and windows files is enough.
why does avast scan all the .exes in program files and slow the startup process ?
I think it should scan program files only if i run that particular program.

Can anyone explain why avast scans program files on startup?

How can i bypass the scanning of program files on startups ? but i want to scan programs only on access.

Thanks for reading this long query.

Thereโ€™s no on-demand scanning at boot. Everything is on-access. That means that a process is accessing these files.

Please refer to http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=3743 for a comprehensive discussion about this.

Thanks
Vlk

ash are you refering to the Boot time scan?

Probably if you wanted a fast boot time you could disable Avast! from loading at system start up and then load it up manually yourself.

No not boot time scan

But the regular startup scan.

Thanks Vlk for that link.

I had too many shortcuts in the C:~\ start menu > programs folder which i moved to another drive.
Those program shortcuts were responsible for scanning of exe files on start.
now my pc loads in 3 mins 35 secs which is a nice improvement for my config.

what do you say??
