Slow update when booting Windows XP

Since some time ago, when my PC starts with windows XP sp3, and my free Avast v. 6.0.1289 (but also the previous version) begins to update the viruses data base, is very slow doing so and it slows down the PC by acceding continuously the HD. This would last about 5 minutes, after which, Avast notifies that data base has been updated and the PC runs again as usual.

I’ve tried reinstalling Avast but the problem continues. I’ve tried to check the option of carrying Avast service after carrying other services, but this neither don’t solve the problem

Anyone can give me an idea? Thanks.

Delay Auto-Update check:
You need to edit (using notepad) avast5.ini the [InetWD] section of the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\avast5.ini (XP file location). Location for Vista, win7, C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5\avast5.ini.
If you did a clean install of avast6 the folder names are slightly different, \Avast Software\Avast\ instead of \Alwil Software\Avast5\ other than that it is the same procedure.

  • Broadband connections, add this line:
    AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120 and
AssumeAlwaysConnected=1 if not present (or edit AssumeAlwaysConnected=0 to AssumeAlwaysConnected=1)
[InetWD] AssumeAlwaysConnected=1 AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120
When complete save the changes, avast's self-defence module will ask for confirmation, etc. answer Yes.

The figure is seconds and the above equates to two minutes, you could try that and adjust upwards if required, 180, 240, etc.

Maybe you’re talking about the amount of CPU used, if that so, you can update it manually and after updating then you can continue with your other tasks

Thank you for your answers.

I realized I’d unchecked the option “My PC is always connected to the Internet”. Perhaps this was the reason of the slowness. If this not work, I’ll try the idea from DavidR. I think isn’t a problem of CPU usage, and I prefer dont’t use manual updates, if I can avoid it.

You’re welcome, let us know how you get on.

Cheking “My PC is always connected to the Internet” seems to improve the booting. However I’ve also tried your suggestion, because I think that lighten the booting process could be a good thing.

Tomorrow I’ll report results.

Thank you.

No problem, glad I could help.

Well, it runs OK now.

Thanks.
