I usually help my 86 yr old dad with his computer every time I visit however on my last visit he told me he did a “routine” Avast update and it took hours.
He now has Google Chrome.
I noticed the Cloud services are on (I’m not sure if they were before).
I don’t see any other new things.
I just tried to update it for him and it is taking a long time once again. He’s using Free Version 8.0.1497.
I don’t think he had any other protection in the past, but I went to Remove Programs and nothing was there.
Dad is using XP.
He said a screen came up saying Avast needed an update and he only clicked OK.
He said no option to install Google Chrome was offered (and no check box). My guess is he is mistaken. He claims he hit OK and hours later the update completed. His memory is not what it was so what he claims may not be 100% accurate.
After updating to version 8 the system reboots and you should get a screen where you can opt-out the installation of Chrome.
It is a known problem that not all people get to see this.
I suspect that is the reason why he now has Chrome installed, but you can safely remove Chrome if he doesn’t want to use it and set another browser as default.
As far as for the slow update, he was not only updating the vps as he was used to but also the application and that takes ofcourse more time.
I went to Remove Programs and nothing was there.
You mean you did not see avast there?
If so, reboot the system and look again.
It should be there.
If not, something is wrong.
Check if the avast ball is near the clock on the taskbar. (may have to click the arrow there before it shows if icons are hidden)
