When I have the “Animate the Icon When Scanning” checked, the time required to load web pages when I am browsing is doubled or tripled. I am running Windows 2000 Sp4 and Avast 4.8 Home Edition. Web page loading is normal with the Avast tray animation turned off. I have searched this Avast Forum for the problem and I have found nothing. Leaving the tray icon animation turned off is OK for my use if this problem can not be corrected. Does anyone know how to fix the problem?
I find that hard to believe as the cause of the slow loading the animation of the icon is a GUI thing.
The Web Shield scans http port 80 web content, when that is scanning the icon rotates to indicate something is being scanned. Turning off the animation doesn’t stop the scanning by the web shield, so there should be zero improvement just by stopping the icon rotating; all that would do is perhaps reduce some system resources (cpu time) but even that would be minimal.
Termination the Web Shield would be the only thing to stop scanning the web pages and improve loading speed, not stopping the icon rotating. So I suspect that there is something else going on, what that might be is the 64,000 dollar question.
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
What is your firewall ?
What other security applications do you have installed ?
DavidR: I would agree with you on the animation should not effect the speed of web pages loading. However, I am sure that was the case with the Firefox 2.0.0.17 I was using. Since starting this thread, I have installed Firefox 3.0.3 over Firefox 2.0.0.17. With the Firefox 3.0.3 upgrade, my web pages are loading fast as they should and at the same speed with or without the Avast icon animation active. I do not have a clue as to what was causing the problem but all is OK now. Thanks for your fast reply to my post.
I have no firewall or other malware programs on this PC. Had AVG 7.5 Malware prior to Avast but uninstalled AVG, rebooted, ran AVG removal tool, rebooted, installed AVG and rebooted (so I think I got read of the AVG as I should have). Glad to get read of the AVG as it has become too much of a burden and drag on the PC to use.

You’re welcome, I hate mysteries too ;D
A firewall is an essential part in your system defence.
Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (sensitive or otherwise, user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential.
- There are many freeware firewalls such as, Comodo, PCTools Firewall Plus, Jetico, etc. - Zone Alarm free works fine with avast and has a reasonably friendly user interface, however, the free version is becoming bloated with trial ware and is also crippled as far as outbound protection goes In the Program Control, configuration area, the slider will only goes as far as Medium protection, if you want more you have to buy the Pro version.

SuperAntiSpyware or MalwareBytes AntiMalware in my signature, the free versions are on-demand scanners so don’t have any real resource issues until you actually run a scan with them, so they work well with avast to improve overall detection/protection.
Hello
Could it be something related to http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=39646.0 and/or http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=39966.0 and/or http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=39729.0
Since they are all linked to webshield??
Thanks
Well considering this has been resolved bu updating to firefox 3.0.3, so I somehow doubt it is related or the problem wouldn’t have been resolve just by updating firefox if it were a web shield problem.
With the Firefox 3.0.3 upgrade, my web pages are loading fast as they should and at the same speed with or without the Avast icon animation active. I do not have a clue as to what was causing the problem but all is OK now.
I’m afraid your relationship is a little loose, if you do a forum search for webshield or web shield, you will find thousands of posts but that doesn’t mean the web shield is bad, there are simply too many possibilities and having gone over the posts you gave links for I can see no corresponding relationship with ‘this’ problem other than the web shield is mentioned.
