Anyone have any tips regarding how to smooth out these problems? I have toyed with timeout settings to no avail. Seems like shutting down 4.6 is the only thing that eliminates them.

Ever since the updating module in Avast downloaded and installed
version 4.6 of your program I have been experiencing latency problems
with email timeouts (partially resolved by upping timeout periods in
Avast and email client), browser timeouts, nntp timeouts.

What operating system are you using? (e.g. Windows 2000 Server…)
Windows XP SP2

What version of avast! are you using? (e.g. 4.0.160 - you can find
this information in “About avast!..” dialog)
4.6.603

What version of VPS file are you using? (e.g. 0303-10, 04/15/2003 -
you can find this information in “About avast!..” dialog)
0508-4, 2/27/05

What is your basic hardware configuration? (e.g. Intel Pentium III 800
MHz, 128 MB RAM)
Intel Celeron 2.4 ghz, 128 mb ram
AMD K-6, 450 mhz, 376 mb RAM

How do you connect to Internet? (e.g. dial-up, using proxy server,
using firewall…)
DSL connection to AMD, proxy to Intel (AnalogX Proxy)
Both machines use Kerio 4.1.2 firewall

What is your e-mail client? (e.g. Outlook, Outlook Express, IncrediMail…)
Spamwasher (Panicware, v 1.2.1052), which receives email and passes it
on to Outlook 2000.
XNews for NNTP access

Do you use some other security software? Which one? (e.g. Norton Antivirus…)
No, just Avast and Kerio Firewall

What are the steps to reproduce the bug again?
I have tried changing timeout periods to better performance. I could
totally disable Avast but that wouldn’t help out very much.

Do any error messages appear? If yes, what exactly do they say?
No error messages. Just timeouts in browsing using IExplorer 6.0 and
Mozilla Firebird 1.0 on both machines. Firebird/Iexplorer cease to
respond and I am forced to close down the apps. On NNTP use,
downloading headers, text and binaries is now choppier. Timeouts have
increased.

Please advise as to patches or a configuration that will minimize
these timeouts. They are incredibly frustrating. No such timeouts
appeared when using version 4.5x (before Feb 25, 2005).

If you disable some providers (for instance, Web Shield and the news scanning) will it help?
If you disable avast completely, what will happen?

Anyway, welcome to avast 8)

Oi,
I disabled the news scanning and that helped a bit. I also shut down the email scanning on the machine that I don’t use for mail. That also made a small difference. Is there a basic config. I can use that is similar to the level of security that was available for 4.5? If I completely shut down Avast the problems disappear, but then I have no AV.

Thanks,
klimi

Seems the major trouble right now…
Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer? Did you have in the past?

I think so… You can disable the Web Shield to see if the problem disappears…
The news scanning and Web Shield are the ‘new’ parts of avast 4.6.

:-
The previous AV on both machines was Avast 4.5x. I ran the auto update tool last week and Avast 4.6x installed itself as a program update. Surprise! Had all previous AV programs (Panda, AntiVir) deleted a long time ago. I had been using Avast 4.5x for some time already. I think I’ll keep the ‘new’ components of Avast switched off and maybe unsinstall it altogether from the slow/old PC. I’ve considered the possiblity that the slowdown is caused by some spyware, but I run Yahoo AntiSpyware, Spybot S&D and Lavasoft Adaware Personal from time to time and never find any malware.
