Hello all, the last few days I’ve noticed a problem with my internet being very slow. I am with Virgin media on the 120 meg bb, and using free avast prog ver 8.0.1497. When I did a speed test using speedtest.net I was only getting around 2 to 4 mbps not good. So I called Virgin they did a few tests over the phone said there was a fault and sent an engineer out the next day Tuesday 29/10. He checked & changed the modem and some old connections on the cable system and improved it to around 30 mbps, but said something was still holding it back and so he’s booked another of his colleagues to call on Friday 1/11 and to have the cable relayed to the house on the 16th.
Now tonight I tested the speed again, back down to 4mbps and I started thinking why I was using Avast it was because the last security system I used that i paid for slowed my computer down by about a half on the internet. So I changed to Avast.
So the punch line, I disabled Avast for 10 mins and tested again and boom back up 124, 115, 120mbps. After Avast was turned back on the readings where still up around the 115 120 mark.
I don’t have anything else on security wise just windows firewall. I’m on windows 7 home premium 64 bit ser pack 1 I recently reformatted my computer so Avast has only been on for about a month or 2. Any Ideas what the problem is or was?
Hello all, back again, addition to last night, I didn’t say I mainly use chrome but it is the same with ie. Back to same problem today Avast on, 3.5 mbps download 2.5 mbps upload Avast off 126 mbps download 11.5 mbps upload. I have just updated the programe to 2014 9.0.2006 and its still the same. Any ideas anyone?
Update to V9.
Hi Asyn thanks for the reply as you can see from my second post I have just done that, it did not make a difference still the same problem :'(.
Sorry, I missed that.
- OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
- Other security related software installed…??
- Which AV(s) did you use before avast!..??
Hi Asyn win 7 home premium 64 bit fully updated sp 1 google chrome, but the same on ie.
windows firewall no other security at all. On a quad core intel i5 3470k 8g mem hard wired to 120 mbps virgin media router.
I have found after trawling round several forums that if I turn of web shield I get full web speed 126mbps, turn it back on 3/4 mbps.
Yet my wife’s laptop which is wi fi dual core win vista with same Avast 2014 9.0.2006 gets 50 or so mbps.
I used Kaspersky before this, and then M S E.
First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AVs.

When done, follow the instructions:
- Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
- Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
- Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
- Reboot.
