Smart-Browser Virus - Detected - but will not stop error message

About every several minutes I get a message; A virus has been detected.
It is about: smart-browser.com/updatex/udpi.jpg - that is the computer is trying to go get this.
From reading it would change the jpg to and exe and then infect the system
When I run a scan - nothing is fouud - good - but how do you stop the
message every couple minutes.
I have tried killing various process, I have spent hours looking at the registry,
I have also run SpyHunter, SpyDoctor, XsftspySE, NoAdware, nothing is found - but the message goes on???/

Help,

Richard

Hi Richard,

First make sure you have updated to the latest version of avast! (4.8) because it has new anti-rootkit capabilities.

Then run a boot-time scan.

If still having problems, try some online scans. (Disable avast! while scanning.)

F-Secure

BitDefender

Panda

Trend Micro Housecall
ESET Online Scanner

If that doesn’t work, post a HijackThis! log.

Hi Richard,

SpyHunter, SpyDoctor, XsftspySE & NoAdware aren’t good. SpyDoctor is on Spyware Warrior’s suspect/rogue list. http://netrn.net/spywareblog/archives/2004/08/01/spy-doctor-and-spyware-doctor/

My recommendations for antispyware are SUPERAntiSpyware & Spyware Terminator. avast! 4.8 includes antispyware protection. My scans with SAS & ST show avast!'s AS does a great job.

Off topic: will have troubles now if we add a parenthesis after the version number 4.8 because it will be transformed into the smile: 8)

Follow exactly the same.

It seems if you look at different reports and inputs you see different opinions on the available S/W.
Check: http://www.adwarereport.com/mt/archives/000004.html
Spyware Doctor has been very good for me. But not for this one problem.
XosftSpy SE has found things - nothing found and it is not so hot in this particular report.

But if you look at: http://www.spyware-remover-comparisons.com/
Then - XsoftSpySE is top rated ? and NoAdware is second??

The above are 2008 Reports. Having seen all this. They didn’t detect this Smart-Browser problem.

Avast found this particular problem but didn’t remove it.

I am 71 - lots of old friends around and I am still very computer active.

My take is that all the Adware Detection - S/W’s are constantly updating and so I have a copy of the current - top rated??? one.

Still looking for a cure for my problem - I really don’t want to rebuild this HD again.
So any and all help is appreciated.

PS: Is there a comparison report that compares the suggest S/Ws to others.

Thanks again. All Help appreciated.

SpywareDoctor is different to SpyDoctor and is a well-known product.

Some review sites just take money from anti-malware companies to place products.

Try and find a review from an unbiased source based on real testing:

As to your problem, you need to update to avast! 4.8 and try a boot time scan-bRight click the scanner screen, select ‘schedule a boot time scan’ and reboot when requested.

Generally they’re not independent, like Frank said.
