Got an iPhone or 3G iPad? Apple is recording your moves

data may be stored locally… got to check that but geolocation is very straight forward to disable on iOS. Still
a good thing as mentioned to encrypt your backups, as those are stored locally and… online.

lol the news is on top of Google news list today

Your iPhone Records Your Whereabouts Secretly

Logos, time to keep the phone in an RFID pouch/bag (or wrap it in aluminum) if you don’t want to be seen. ;D Pretty sad what needs to be done for privacy.

USArmy to Issue Droid Dev. Kit [Update]:

I’m just not happy about one thing: I would have liked to see that file (containing locations etc…), but the authors of the article only provide a MAV version of the viewer ::slight_smile: … anyway if it’s located in the backups (hopefully…), the tool might not be needed… will see.

jesus… the iPhone tracking thing is being related in all French mainstream news medias now… and no need to say it everywhere else. Sounds like as I guessed but wasn’t sure at all yesterday, the tracking doesn’t depend on geolocation settings found in iOS UI. It happens anyway.

Yeah, if you have the phone geolocator on or off. That’s why I made the comment about the RFID pouch…no joke.

one important thing to note is that yeah, it’s important to encrypt the backup (@Mac and PC level) as it syncs with the cloud, but - stating the obvious - the backed up file, or the info, in whatever form it is collected is on your phone, where it can be transmitted … or not… need a good sniffer to check that. Like I described in a post above, you can view iPhone connections with fiddler (MS utility)… but it could take ages until you find out about this particular transmission, if it ever happens.

Well, as the pressure gets higher Apple has to answer some questions…

a good read here: http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/#faq
according to them , there’s no evidence that the data is transmitted. It can’t - in clear - when encrypted anyway (but that’s not the default)… and who knows what happens from the phone…

yeah I shouldn’t feel personally concerned as I own an iPod and no iPhone, meaning that obviously there’s no GPS there. But… I’ve been absolutely amazed for a while now by the precision of geolocation tools on the system. It’s done via Internet exclusively (as I’m just on wifi), like it would be on a desktop… with this main difference: geolocation from desktop apps find your nearest ISP server… and that’s most of the time a few miles away from where you live… while geolocation on iOS finds you exactly where you are… believe it or not… and not just the street, but where in the street >>> this can be checked on Apple’s “map” app in satellite view where you’ll find a nice tag on top of your exact location: your house or the building where your flat is. I have no idea how they do that… anyway at this level, geolocation can be deactivated completely from iOS UI.

Yeah, that little blue dot ;D

Googling revealed this?
http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/23/skyhooks-wi-fi-location-technology-for-iphone-ipod-touch/

US Senator, Al Franken, has written a letter to Apple, asking questions about why the data was not encrypted, how precise the information is and why weren't consumers informed of the existence of the tracking.

http://www.franken.senate.gov/files/letter/110420_Apple_Letter.pdf

yeah I knew and I thought about that (I got the “free wifi app”), but there’s no wifi hotspot in my direct neighborhood. The nearest ones are a few hundred meters away, and not in the same street. So, unless they detect - and they probably do - my router… or my iPod…,this could be it… but I don’t believe it’s that, because my iPod detection of these hotspots from where I live is very erratic, and geolocation like I described it works all the time.

edit: okay this should be it after all, as the hotspots have obviously a more powerful detection than my device has.

Just what we need. Politicians sticking their nose into more things that they probably know little about.
Geo Location if you don’t like it, turn it off. If you turn it off, then don’t complain if your mapping doesn’t
work properly.
Unless you have someone after you, what’s the difference if it’s possible to see where you are at any one time ???

It now appears that turning off "Location Services" in the iPhone does not stop the collection of data in the "consolidated.db" database.

Breaking news: your iPhone is tracking you
