Cops Refuse to Say if They Secretly Snarf Cellphone Data:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/04/21/police_cellphone_searches/

This article pertains to the US but I’m sure it will spread. I guess the harvesting of cell phone data has been going on for a while and we didn’t know about it. Now that the news about the iPhone data collection has been leaked, everyone is up in arms about it since the police have a tool to read the data from any smartphone just being near it…like parked near you and you wouldn’t know they are doing this.

I knew about that for a while. Been privy to it myself, actually. None of it is admissible in court. (well, without a warrant anyhow)

Not admissible in court, huh? That’s not what the news is saying where I live. Of course this story changes by the hour. ::slight_smile: I’m sure a warrant is needed if you ask me or there would be lawsuits.

That would also depend on whether you can hire an attorney or are stuck with a Public Defender. Money rules the American Judicial System.

okay I just found a French article about the tracking issue - or non-issue - on iPhones, and that’s interesting, might have been a lot of fuss for nothing… so here’s a link to a Google translated page (yeah far from perfect…)

http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fiphoneaddict.fr%2Fpost%2Fnews-19875-iphone-mouchard-beaucoup-de-bruit-pour-rien&sl=fr&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8

"data file Consolidated.db required for the operation of the iPhone, are recorded but not erased due to a programming bug. The piece of code supposed to delete them has obviously never been developed "

Later, it’s always the fault of a “programming bug”… ;D

Apple sued over iPhone location tracking

Windows 7 Phone Sends User’s Location Data to Microsoft:

So if you’re ever lost, just call Microsoft and ask them where you are. ;D ;D ;D

Statement from Apple - Q&A on Location Data
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2011/04/27location_qa.html

lol ;D (I read they said that already… )

7. When I turn off Location Services, why does my iPhone sometimes continue updating its Wi-Fi and cell tower data from Apple’s crowd-sourced database? It shouldn’t. This is a bug, which we plan to fix shortly (see Software Update section below).

… more important:

Software Update Sometime in the next few weeks Apple will release a free iOS software update that:

reduces the size of the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database cached on the iPhone,
ceases backing up this cache, and
deletes this cache entirely when Location Services is turned off.
In the next major iOS software release the cache will also be encrypted on the iPhone.

major update on KiK >>> now 5.0
http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/kik-messenger/id357218860?mt=8
https://market.android.com/details?id=kik.android

… what the page doesn’t tell is that the new version supports ssl (at least for the iPhone version). Okay and just for info, the guy developing the app is an ex-dev from Blackberry messenger. The app (KiK) got banned from blackberry store and there are legal issues (copyright), but who cares ::slight_smile:
