I just got a notice this morning to update Avast, which I did and restarted. Then I started a Smart Scan, which was OK until it got to Advanced Issues. It stuck at 76% and I tried to stop the scan. Nothing happened, so I rebooted. When I started another Smart Scan it stuck at 75% on Advanced Issues. As I write this it is still showing 75% and Task Manager shows very little action by Avast, although I’m not sure how much CPU it uses normally. I’m going to have to reboot again to at least have access to other parts of Avast.
Same issue as JASAmigan except I hang at 68%. Tried the repair recomendation but still an issue. One note, this started happening after the update to Windows 10, version 1903
Since I’m using the Free version of Avast, I also know that all of the items found
only lead to a sales pitch for the paid items needed to resolve what was found.
My selection will simply be Skip for now
I’m getting this same issue…my scan freezes at “Scanning for advanced threats…”. At first it froze at 65%. I had to use Task Manager to force it to finally stop. I then tried using the repair. Same problem. Then I tried to uninstall it completely and reinstall it. This time it got to Scanning for advanced threats…97% and stayed there for hours before I had to force it to end again.
I’ve used Avast for a long time and would like to continue to use it but I don’t know how I can use something that won’t complete scanning even if I will ignore advanced threats it may find. Unless someone make a suggestion to fix this I guess I’m going to move to something else.
Been having the same issues (64% freeze on Advanced Issues) since the July 28 update. Truly frustrating, but I’m glad to know that I am not the only user experiencing the problem. At this moment I only regret that I prepaid for Avast Premier for the next 3 years!
Yup! I had been having the problem since about then as well. It took me a few days to get around to trying a couple of things…the LAST thing I want to be dealing with is a broken anti-virus program. Avast Free was the best free AV out there for a while but this recurring issue has been frustrating enough to make me move to something different. It’s too bad Avast marketing people had to get in the way of the function of a good product…the Advanced Issues scan is done only on the free version to try to get me to upgrade and now that’s killing effective use of the whole system.
I’m sorry to hear that you are locked into what has become a buggy product. I’d try to ask for your money back…especially since there has not been ANY response to this problem through this forum or an update that fixed the problem after WEEKS!
Hey bob3160!
Thanks for your suggestions. I had tried the repair routine several times before even posting about this. Since your post had suggested a clean uninstall process program that I had not seen before I just tried that last night. I even did it twice. The first time it froze on Advanced Issues at 69%. The second time it froze on Advanced Issues at 99%. I left it up for hours to no avail.
I can’t afford to spend this much time trying to debug Avast. I used the clean uninstall one more time to remove it form my computer and I fired up Microsoft Defender which has gotten some positive reviews lately. Interestingly, my first scan using Defender found 2 viruses that Avast didn’t detect. I think they were pretty old viruses and probably not dangerous.
I enjoyed my use of Avast despite the constant interruptions to upgrade. I will come back to check this thread to see if they finally fixed the problem and, at that time, I may switch back.
Hard to troubleshoot your problem when we really have no information as to your system, OS, other security related programs installed etc.
Please realize that Avast has over 400M customers and the complaints about this problem are very minimal.
As posted, I’ve had some pauses during the running of the scan but have never experienced a total stall on my Windows 10 v1903 systems.
