smtp settings for gmail???

Has anyone been able to configure Avast home to scan gmail with outlook express? I have tried but to no avail. So far my settings look like this:

  1. I have changed the Avast smtp settings to reflect gmail’s smtp server and the proper port (I believe 465).
  2. I have all the boxes checked so that notes are supposed to inserted into incoming and outgoing messages.
  3. I have entered all the proper authentication settings into Avast for the gmail smtp server.

What else do I need to do?

I’m not 100% sure, but I think that Gmail uses SSL (Secure Socket Layer) connection. avast! doesn’t support SSL, and Vlk said, most likely it never will…

If you are using a NT based system, that should not be needed since Avast's mail protection is transparent.

Gmail uses authentication, not ssl as far as I know.

Which is the pop3 server?
Does GMail requires pop3 authentication? (I think it’s impossible to use smtp, am I right?)

So, in short, the avast mail scanner doesn’t support SSL (it has never had).

  1. interception of the traffic by avast
  2. actual scanning of the traffic

Unchecking the SMTP box in Internet Mail provider’s settings disables 2 but not 1.

To prevent avast from doing 1 (which makes sense in your case as you’re using SSL), please open the file \data\avast4.ini, and to the [MailScanner] section, add the following line:

StartSMTP=0

Besides using MS Outllook (not Express) and The Bat! for SSL, here is a workaround for SSL and POP3 accounts:
