Just wondering…does anyone have experience with key logging software such as Sniperspy? Will avast recognize an attempt by such a program to install itself on a Windows 7-based PC?

In the case of an install detection is difficult, but for securety reasons when already infected you can use an on-screen keyboard.
Click on Start → Go to All Programs → Click on Accessories → Select Accessibility ->Click on On-Screen Keyboard
An attempt to install the module is detected by avast as Win32 Trojan-gen (Other), be aware it can also come in the form of an e-mail attachment or socially engineered attachment saying that it is an important OS patch for which you have to have to disable your av software temporarely. Never do such a thing, patches do not come that way,
