HI I AM NO PC EXPERT BUT YESTERDAY MY DAUGHTER HAD A MESSAGE COME UP SAYING SOFT COP HAD DETECTED INFECTED FILES AND IF I REGISTERED IT WOULD REPAIR THEM.I GOOGLED SOFTCOP AND FOUND IT IS A ROGUE SPYWARE PROGRAMME I ALREADY HAVE NORTONS BUT I DECIDED TO INSTALL AVAST HOME 4.8 TO FIX IT CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF I CAN BE SURE IT IS RESOLVED?
There are many variants of these rouge applications, the initial file doesn’t really contain anything malicious other that the fake security alerts which is why it is hard to detect them. Whatever you do, don’t visit the site or run a scan from that site or install it or you will be properly infected. Most certainly don’t pay for any service like this as you could be open to fraudulent transactions from the data you give.
You should only have one resident scanner installed as having two resident scanners installed is not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable. See #### below.
If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it and report the findings (it should product a log file).
-
- MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, On-Demand only in free version http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe, right click on the link and select Save As or Save File (As depending on your browser), save it to a location where you can find it easily later. - 2. SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version.
Don’t worry about reported tracking cookies they are a minor issue and not one of security, allow SAS to deal with them though. - See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie.
The first was initially designed for such rogue programs and should be a reasonable bet.
A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT
Or ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
Please don't use all CAPS it doesn't make it any easier to read and is considered shouting, thanks.
