Softpedia Interview

FYI… http://news.softpedia.com/news/Softpedia-Exclusive-Interview-avast-5-140693.shtml

Good read, thanks for posting

Ondrej Vlcek: We recently did a survey among our users who decided to upgrade to the paid product, and the results were quite interesting. About one third of the users upgraded because they just felt like paying us some money (after a year or two of using the free product). And another third upgraded because they were convinced the paid product would provide better protection (without actually studying what were the technical differences).
That's quite interesting, I didn't quite expect that... ;)
Ondrej Vlcek: The online scanner is outdated now – it was never a full blown scanner, just a handy tool to scan a single file. And with online services like VirusTotal or Jotti available for some time now, we feel that the usefulness of this tool is very limited.

I have personally found this useful…especially when I am not at an avast! pc (or in linux). I find it quicker than VT (obviously) and it just confirms detection when needed.

For example, used when in linux: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55134.msg466976#msg466976

Thanks for info

Interesting - I gave some feedback a while ago saying that I upgraded to AIS because:

  • I thought it was probably time I paid Avast some money
  • I was keen on the silent 2-way firewall
I wondered what proprtion of people upgrading had similar reasons.
(Having said that, the firewall is a bit too silent on my machine (and some other XP machines) since 5.0.507 came out - the service stops without letting me know - but Lukor has got the mdmp files and will hopefully find out what is going on).

Great interview…!! Thanks…!

Yes, a good interview, especially the part about the Behaviour Shield as this clearly shows why there aren’t that many detection using it right now as it is more of a specialist tool than an overall behaviour checker (Sniper rather than Shotgun/Machine gunner). So we look forward to 5.1 to see the addition of more sensors.

Now we need to see more of this in other areas, cnet/download.com (thought that would have been first since they have the link up in the avast downloads.), MajorGeeks, and some of the computer media, PC Magazines, etc.

talking 5.1, I wouldn’t mind having an idea of the beta testing period if any, if we can expect this before the summer…or not… ;D

Very interesting!

Vlk,
Can I translate it into Spanish and put it in a forum that helps people to get rid of malware?

Advise…rm

Read… But I didn’t find any “surprise” on it

Thanks Vlk
