Software Updater: Incorrect Information

The Avast software updater is flagging me as needing a Java update (both x86 and x64), even though version 7.0.250.16 is current (It thinks 7.0.250.17 is current). I know it’s easy enough to dismiss this warning but I feel it’s better to make the programmers aware of it so that it can be fixed (Perhaps in future the program should have a button for flagging faulty software update information?)

check controlpanel > ad/remove programs …if you see any old java versions there, uninstall them and reboot

The current version is 7.0.250.17.

That is correct. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre7-downloads-1880261.html will serve JRE 7 U25 17. V 17 was released the day after v16, causing the confusion.

I have 7.0.25.16 and the java.com page reports that I have the current version.

I’ve downloaded and installed a new copy from filehippo.com and now I still have 7.0.25.16

How can it be so “Critical” if java haven’t even bothered to give it a number that shows differently in the offline filename?

Tried to update using the Avast “Update now” button, and now I have a file that claims to be 7.0.25.17 but when installed it is unable to test the java version. I’m using Chrome browser (updated today) and the java version page says it needs the java plugin installed.

Seems to me it would be a lot easier to wait for Java’s own updater to get round to doing the updating - unless the update really is as critical as Avast claims.

I should have rebooted my browser after the update. The new version is now verifying OK, and Avast rescan now shows java as up to date.

To see whether the java offline installation file is correct, hover over the file in Windows Explorer and the full version number is shown.

I’m still puzzled that java and filehippo aren’t bothering about this update, yet Avast says it is Critical.
