I’d like to know too. Every time the computer reboots, the Software Updater starts. I have to keep manually stopping it. How do I disable it permanently?
Lets put it this way (as an avast user) I too did a custom install and unchecked the software updater and it wasn’t installed, so I don’t know why there is that inconsistency.
If it were a bug or a feature as you say then I would have expected it to be reflected on all installations. Though I would imaging the number of people doing a custom install as opposed to a default express install would be much smaller.
I’m running the latest avast beta 8.0.1485 and the Software updater settings Enable can be unchecked and it should persist beyond the reboot. So that should be available when the next regular program version update is released.
Of course you can remove it from the Control Panel > add remove programs/programs & features > avast! Uninstall > when the new window opens select Change and click the Next button, uncheck the Software Updater and OK your way out. You may need to reboot after this.
David: I have version 8.01.1483 installed and that option to disable Software Updater isn’t available - settings for Software Updater shows 2 options: (1) allow update of system-wide products for administrators only and (2) automatically download updates if possible.
When I try to update Avast I am told I have the latest version.
I shall try the Control Panel action and see what happens.
As I said it is in the beta build (you can’t update from regular to beta versions), only when the beta testing ends will it be released as a regular program update. Until then it is removal using the control panel, uninstall method I mentioned.
I went into add/remove software. I did a modify of the Avast and told it to uninstall the software updater portion. That worked. Still don’t know why they just wouldn’t let me shut it off but keep it installed.
As an avast user I don’t know why, possibly an omission that has been corrected in the beta version and will be in the next regular program update when released.
