Software updater repeatedly tells me to update Audacity but I have the most up-to-date version installed already.
Is this because I refuse all the tag-along junk like delta, bubbledock etc?
I use Chrome and Firefox.

The software updater looks at Audacity, not at junk that you may or may not install along with it.
What version of avast are you using?
Please post a screenshot of the software updater where it tells you that there is a new(er) version and mention what version you currently have installed.
Ofcourse make sure we can see the 2 versions the updater is mentioning.
