Just a FYI as the problem was solved.

I had the Software Updater disabled, going into the appropriate screen I was not able to turn it back on by clicking the button top right (as per attachment), it was unresponsive. Yes I tried running a repair.

I had to go into settings> tools> software updater and succeeded from there.

Thanks to you my mate for showing me how to do this. I have posted 2 support tickets with Avast within 6 days asking to re-enable software updater and not had one single response. Dreadful service. Wish I had come here first. Cheer - Graham.
