When I connect to Virustotal.com using Google Chrome (Version 40.0.2214.111)
I get what appears to be a broken ssl lock, which makes me think that the connection is not secure.
Disabling ssl scanning in the web shield fixes this problem. Can anyone comment on this? Is this fixed in the beta?
Install the latest version of avast.
Fine, I will test beta and see if this is fixed in that version or not and report back.
Confirmed, the issue is fixed in Avast! beta 2015.10.2.2209, hopefully the beta completes soon so that stable can get these fixes.

Well, the beta was released only about a week ago.
So far it looks like many problems are solved in it, but who knows what turns up as a problem with this version…
