*solved* No mail sending or receiving with deinstalled avast or no "MailSchutz"

Hello there!

I’m from Germany and I have to tell you that the Avast 2015 free that I’m using has got a German interface. So I hope I get the terms right.

I have got a problem. After I have deinstalled Avast with the deinstall utility (in windows safe mode), I can’t send or receive e-mails. I’m using Thunderbird, but apparently Thunderbird is not the problem. Telnet won’t reach the mail servers, too. It affects all mail servers that I’m using (yahoo, hotmail, gmx, gmail, …).

I reinstalled Avast, and the mail functionality is back, no problems at all. So there must be something that Avast has reconfigured in my Windows 7 (pro 64-bit).
If I deactivate mail protection (in German “Mail-Schutz”) in Avast’s settings menu under Active Protection (German “Aktiver Schutz”), mail won’t work as well!

When receiving Thunderbird tries to connect to the servers, but can’t either reach them or the connection breaks up without a failure notice. When I try to send mails, a failure notice appears that says that the smtp server could not be reached for unknown reasons.

Maybe someone out there has got an idea what I can do to fix my windows without reinstalling it. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Alex

Remove the certificate from avast in Thunderbird and see if it makes a difference.
If not, perform a clean installation of Thunderbird and setup your email from scratch.

Hello and thanks for the suggestion; it worked. Somehow the user profile in Thunderbird had got corrupted. “Clean” Thunderbird works; and so does Postbox to which I migrated in course of this event …

Still it’s strange why Telnet won’t work. Anyway, thanks again for your help! Case closed

Always nice to hear a problem is solved.

No problem  Have seen too many ‘open end’ threads. In the end it’s just a case of courtesy to tell the others what solved the problem …
