today i updated avast from 5.0.677 to 5.1.677…at least thats what the “update” section says…furthermore there is a message saying that there is a new version available(5.1.864)…so i click update and then it says that its already up to date besides the fact that its not the 5.1.864…below are 2 photos explaining the problem.

You can try repair avast from control panel->add remove application"Or programs and features in win7" then choose avast and click change a new window will appear choose repair
What happens after a reboot?
yep…the reboot resolved the problem and now it shows the correct program version…didnt think to try a reboot because this problem occured after aavast suggested to reboot for the update to take effect…anyway thanks a lot guys for the quick reply
