SOLVED -VPD Error (VPD destroyed) - Cannot start avast! Linux HE in Ubuntu 10.04

Hi everyone!

I am new to this forum and hope that someone can help me.

I am running Linux Mint 9 Isadora 32-bit, which is based on Ubuntu 10.04.

I installed avast! Linux Home Edition months ago and so far it worked fine. But after a virus signature update that I started from the terminal today using the command “avast-update” I can not start avast anymore. I get the following error message:

“An error occured in avast! engine: VPD Datei wurde zerstört!” (which translates: VPD file has been destroyed!)

I tried to reinstall avast! using the deb-file (without uninstalling avast first, because I have no idea how to do that properly). That did not work. Still the same error message.

By the way, when checking the system kernel limit by typing “sudo gedit /etc/init.d/rcS” into the terminal I found it still looks like it is supposed to:

#! /bin/sh # # rcS # # Call all S??* scripts in /etc/rcS.d/ in numerical/alphabetical order #

sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=128000000

exec /etc/init.d/rc S

So I guess it has nothing to do with that particular avast! engine error.

Can anyone tell me what this VPD error means and how to fix the problem?

Since no one had a solution to the problem, I now did a complete reinstall of Mint 9. Now avast! works fine again. No problems so far.

I will mark this post solved. even though a new install of the OS is not really the easy way I was hoping for for solving this issue. :-\
