This issue is very similar to posting “Some files could not be scanned” (topic=90883.0)
About 2 weeks ago I got an ‘extortion’ message stating that
computer is infected and I need to call some phone number to get the service.
Hard rebooted and ran Avast full scan.
Get results in the end that some files cannot be read:
Disk \?\Volume{78287502-720b-11df-b39a-806e6f6e6963} Boot Record Error: The device is not ready (21)
Volume{78287502-720b-11df-b39a-806e6f6e6963} Error: The device is not ready (21)
As I worked with the machine it was degrading in front of me, i.e. telling me that I do not have a valid version of Windows,
which is not true.
I have 2 partitions on my single physical drive C: - for installations, and D: for files. (Also have some 100MB partition without a drive letter.)
Restored the C: partition from a backup I did 11/17/2012 using Paragon Backup & Recovery v10.2 Free edition.
(The backup included the 1st record, MBR, and partition without a drive letter).
I used this trick before couple of time with good success.
Proceeded with all updates of Avast and Windows 7 as prompted, only to find out that the dreaded 2 lines are still there.
NOTE: I did not ran Avast immediately after restore.
Now, each scan produces the following log with the message “Some files cannot be scanned”:
Disk \?\Volume{78287502-720b-11df-b39a-806e6f6e6963} Boot Record Error: The device is not ready (21)
…
Several lines about zip files that are encrypted (yes, I have them)
…
Volume{78287502-720b-11df-b39a-806e6f6e6963} Error: The device is not ready (21)
I have
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Machine is up to date with it’s software, except no SP1 is installed.
(It consistently fails to be installed)
Antivirus: Avast Free Antivirus v2014.9.0.2021
(with “Browser Cleanup” feature uninstalled, as it was constantly prompting me for ‘bad’ add-ons’ and, if okaed,
removing my Chrome and Firefox browsers, VPN4All, Irfanview, and Ashampoo programs, plus potentially some more.)
Virus Definitions: 140728-2
Could the fix for “Some files could not be scanned” (topic=90883.0) be applied here?
Thank you.
